Lyss [ ˈliːs ] ( Bern German : [ ˈliːsː ]) is a political municipality ( community of residents ) in the Seeland administrative district in the Swiss canton of Bern .

Lyss has over 15,000 inhabitants. Since the population is over 10,000, Lyss can also be considered a city . Lyss has received the ' Energy City ' label for promoting renewable energies . The rapidly developing regional center has retained much of the Zeeland village character to this day.

geography

Lyss lies on the edge of the wide plain at the southern foot of the Jura, which stretches from southwest to northeast from Lake Murten over the Grosse Moos and the Alte Aare to near Grenchen . Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel close off the west of this extension . In the northwest rises the Jura massif with the 1606  m above sea level. M. high Chasseral , which can be seen from Lyss. This plain has little gradient and is also called the Bernese Seeland . Up until the correction of the waters of the Jura, it was frequently hit by floods from the Aare . The alluvial land consists of deposits from the Saane and Aare rivers . Lyss lies at the entrance of the Lyssbach into this alluvial plain . Until the construction of a flood relief tunnel in 2012, the Lyssbach has repeatedly overflowed its banks in the past decades.

The municipality of Lyss is bounded in the west by the course of the old Aare and the Biel – Lyss motorway . In the east it includes the hilly landscape with the forests of Bannholz, Dreihubelwald and Bagguul and in the southeast the Rikartsholz. At the foot of the Dreihubelwald lies the intercantonal forest training center Wald Lyss education center . The Lyss observation tower , built in 2009, is located on Chrüzhöchi in Dreihubelwald .

Almost the entire flat part of the community area is built over with settlement areas.

About 8 km from Lyss is the east bank of Lake Biel ; to the southwest lie the Neuenburger and Murten lakes and to the south the Wohlensee . The distance to the capital of the district of Aarberg is 3 km, to the federal city of Bern approx. 20 km and to the city of Biel / Bienne 10 km.

The climate in Lyss can be described as cool, temperate , as is to be expected in Central Europe . Temperatures and precipitation correspond to the values usual in the Swiss Central Plateau and in the Bernese Seeland.

Surname

The place name Lyss is most likely to be seen as a transfer from Lyssbach , which originally had the same name . The name of the water body could go back to an Indo-European root - “pour, flow, trickle”; it would later have been expanded with the clarifying addition -bach , while the settlement would have retained the old form of the name. Of the numerous other interpretations put forward in the past, the derivation of a Celtic word * lessa , which is supposed to mean '(small) hut, stable', enjoys greater popularity, but it probably lacks any basis.

history

The Zealand area was originally settled by Celts . Later it belonged to the area around the Roman city of Aventicum .

In 1009 Lyss was first mentioned as Lissa in a deed of gift . Already in the early Middle Ages, the place was on the settlement and language border between the Alamanni and Burgundy . Lyss belonged to the county of Aarberg and came into the possession of the city of Bern in 1377.

Like other villages in the area, Lyss had to struggle for a long time with recurring floods. Back then, the Lyssbach drove mills , as can be seen from some street names today (Oeleweg, Mühleplatz, Walkeweg). In 1831 and 1832 there were particularly severe floods in Zealand, which then led to the establishment of the first correction committee. There were two more floods in June and August 2007, which resulted in severe property damage.

The first phase of the Jura water correction lasted from 1868 to 1878. The Aare was diverted westward from Aarberg into Lake Biel (through the Hagneck Canal ) after the Nidau-Büren Canal had been completed, which flows back into the Aare as a wider outflow from Lake Biel below Lyss. With these measures, large areas of land were protected from flooding.

In 1864 the railway line from Bern via Lyss to Biel / Bienne was opened and twelve years later the railway line from Lausanne via Murten and Lyss to Solothurn . Lyss thus became a transport hub. In 1887 a new road followed from Biel via Lyss to Bern. This offered very good conditions for trade, commerce and industry, which can be measured by the development of the population.

In 1956 and 1979 the industrial areas of Schachen and Grien Süd were developed. The formerly independent school communities Lyss and Hardern formed the community of Lyss in its current form after the merger in 1974.

On January 1, 2011, the municipality of Busswil bei Büren merged with Lyss.

Traditionally the strongest forces are the FDP , SP and SVP , and the EPP has been represented in the Council for a long time. Since the legislature that began in 2010, the BDP , glp and the Greens have also been represented, but the Association for Municipal Politics (VGP) was no longer there . As a result of the merger of Lyss with Busswil on January 1, 2011, seven people from Busswil were re-elected to the GGR in September 2010, which is why the council was temporarily expanded to 47 seats and comprised 44 seats for the 2014-2017 legislature.

Here the main roads and railway lines from Solothurn to Murten and Lausanne crossed with those from Biel / Bienne to Bern. Nowadays, only the Biel / Bienne – Bern railway line, the main roads and the A6 autobahn , with the section of the autobahn between Biel and Lyss, are of importance for transport.

Street

In 1986 the connection to the Swiss motorway network was added to the traffic junction already described above . The A6 from Wimmis via Thun , Bern and Lyss to Biel / Bienne joins the A16 , also known as “Transjurane”, which leads to the French motorway network via Delémont , Porrentruy and Boncourt .

The international airport Bern-Belp is only 30 kilometers away from Lyss .

train

Lyss is on the Biel / Bienne – Bern , Kerzers – Lyss and Lyss – Solothurn railway lines . The community has a train station with express train connections to Bern and Biel and is integrated into the Bern S-Bahn network with the S3 . Regional trains run in the direction of Biel, Bern, Büren an der Aare and Kerzers. Another regional train station is located on the Bern - Biel line in the Busswil district, which has been part of Lyss since the merger. Another stop (Lyss-Grien) is located on the Lyss Aarberg line between the Grien sports complex and the Süd Industriering.

Local bus

The quarters within Lyss are served by a local bus on 3 lines. After a three-year pilot phase, three of the four lines were added to the regular timetable with the 2014 timetable change.

In the community there is the sports center Grien, a park swimming pool, the so-called Seelandhalle with artificial ice rink, the tennis facility Grünau and several sports halls.

In April 1982 the Adriatic city of Monopoli in the Italian province of Apulia became the sister city of Lyss. The choice of Monopolis was not difficult, as many former monopolitans have been living and working in Lyss for years.
