The Church of the Nativity of Mary is the Roman Catholic parish church in Lyss , the parish of the Nativity of Mary Lyss - Zealand.

History and parish structure

The Biel pastor Jakob Lörtscher was able to gather for the first time on December 17, 1944, the Catholics living scattered in Zealand for a service in a laundry room in Lyss. After that, the chanting room of the Kirchenfeldschulhaus was allowed to be used for Catholic services. From 1953 the Reformed Parish made its old, vacant church available for a small rent. As a pastor, Kasimir Jäggi (1917–2003) initially worked as a vicar and later as a pastor for the community. Soon the desire arose for their own church and so in 1947 a fund for church buildings was established. Thanks to the pastor's eager collecting activity, half of the later construction costs could be brought in, and the financing of the church building was secured with a tax increase of 4% in favor of the fund. The parish was initially able to acquire a plot of land in the industrial area of 4000 m², which was, however, unsuitable for a church. In spite of this, an architecture competition was announced, in which the design by the Bernasconi brothers' architects from Biel won. The parish assembly accepted the project in 1955. At the insistence of the local community, however, a plot of land was sought in the residential zone and an area of 3500 m² was found on Oberfeldweg, and the building site at the armory was given up. The reorientation to the new site resulted in another construction delay, but the architects were able to keep their cost offer. On March 6, 1958, the parish assembly approved the plans and offers and on March 26, 1958, the foundation stone was laid with Bishop Franziskus von Streng . After a decade and a half of planning and only one year of construction, the church was consecrated by the bishop on March 22, 1959. In 2019 the parish celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Church of the Birth of Mary in Lyss with various events under the motto Really Lots of Life .

Building description

The church on Oberfeldweg stands on a hillside above a wide forecourt to which the bell tower connects to the left and the rectory to the right. Seven steps form a wide staircase that leads under a low canopy to the two entrance gates. The church was built on a trapezoidal plan with a slightly sloping gable roof in a north-west - south-east orientation. Its main facade is designed as a concrete glass window. The parish and community premises were added to the south in 1977.

Interior and artistic equipment

Church interior

As early as the planning phase, the architects Bernasconi commissioned the artist Peter Travaglini from Büren to study the artistic furnishings using a model and the plans. With the glass wall of the north facade and the 14 triangular windows, the artist wanted to represent the symbols of faith. His carefully thought-out designs met with approval from the architects as well as from the pastor and the Catholic Council. However, the church council in Biel only approved the proposals with reservations. The responsibility for the daring construction of the glass concrete facade was left only to the Catholic Council of Lyss. Travaglini was able to discuss the subjects of the pictures with the pastor and start work. The triangular windows on the left wall represent the seven days of creation, as their counterpart, the seven sacraments are symbolized on the right. Travaglini designed the back wall of the baptistery between the entrance doors with the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. Most impressive, however, is the large glass wall with the Virgin Mary and the child, which is shown on one side over the entire height of the room. The other side is dominated by a dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit and below the fish symbol for Christ. The artist filled the open spaces with circular elements as if they were crocheting. With the colorful windows, there was no need for other works of art. A wooden ceiling spans the nave with the wooden benches. Two corridors corresponding to the entrance doors lead to the front of the altar. Bright, indirect light illuminates the retracted choir room from above. Plain granite blocks were used for the altars, the ambo and the font. After the altar was moved to the choir steps after the liturgical reform, a depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus by Cuno Amiet was hung as an altarpiece instead of the cross . A statue of the Virgin Mary made of natural wood stands on the side altar of the left choir wall. Opposite the right choir wall, the tabernacle found a worthy place after the redesign.

Tower and bells

Bell tower and church

The construction of the 25-meter-high, free-standing bell tower could only begin later after the land had been modified. However, it was completed in time for the consecration of the bells on March 22, 1959. Originally it consisted of two free-standing and openly connected concrete pillars, which were later covered with concrete elements, presumably due to structural necessity. Behind the sound holes by the bell cage hang the Christ, Mary, Joseph and Guardian Angel bells with the chimes e ', f sharp', g sharp 'and b'.
