Location of the municipality | |
Wengi ( Bern German Wängi [ væŋi ]) is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . In addition to the resident community, there is also a Reformed parish under the name Wengi .
geography
The community of Wengi consists of the three villages Scheunenberg, Waltwil and Wengi bei Büren. The neighboring communities are Rapperswil , Grossaffoltern , Diessbach bei Büren in the canton of Bern and Schnottwil and Balm bei Messen in the canton of Solothurn (clockwise). Wengi is centrally located in the upper Limpach valley between the four cities of Bern , Biel , Solothurn and Burgdorf , all of which can be reached by car within 20 minutes. The two cantonal roads Seedorf - Koppigen and Büren - Zollikofen cross in Wengi . The next motorway connection is the exit (8) Münchenbuchsee on the motorway A6 ( Biel - Thun ). Wengi is connected to the public transport network through Postbus courses, which serve the routes from Zollikofen via Büren an der Aare to Solothurn and from Lyss to Messen SO .
economy
Up until the second half of the 20th century, Wengi was a village dominated by agriculture . With the amelioration of the Limpach plain and the correction of the brook between 1939 and 1951, valuable cultivated land was gained. Even today, agriculture , dairy farming and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the surrounding agglomerations .
history
Wengen was first mentioned in a document in 1262 when it was sold to the Frienisberg Abbey , but from 1406 it belonged to the counties acquired by the State of Bern . In 1501 Bern allocated Wänge to the Landvogtei Büren.
From 1846 to 1848 the road from Bern to Büren and in 1864 the road from Suberg to Bätterkinden were expanded. During the Second World War , large amounts of peat were extracted in the Wengimoos ; from 1941 to 1943 the Limpach Canal was built and in 1951 the improvement of the Limpach valley was completed. In 1961 the Wengimoos was placed under nature protection.
In 1963, the district communities Scheunenberg, Waltwil and Wengi merged to form the Wengi community.
