  • The Swiss Autobahn 6 and Autostrasse 6 connect Biel / Bienne via Bern with the Bernese Oberland . The A6 lies entirely in the canton of Bern and is part of the national road 6 from Biel to Gampel . Via the A5 east bypass Biel, it continues through the Jura as the A16 . On the Bernese Oberland side, it was originally planned to lead them through the Simmental into the Valais .

The heart of today's A6 motorway is the national road 6, which begins at Bern Wankdorf as a junction from the A1 and leads via Muri bei Bern and Thun to the Lattigen ( Spiez ) junction , where the A8 continues towards Interlaken , Brünig and Central Switzerland . The N6 turns off at the Lattigen junction in the direction of Wimmis and ends with the Simmenfluh tunnel, where it joins Hauptstrasse 11 . After the tunnel, main road 11 continues in the direction of Simmental , Zweisimmen , Saanen and from there into Valais to Vionnaz . The entire length of the N6 is designed as a directionally separate motorway. An earlier plan for the A6 through the Simmental and a Rawil tunnel into the Valais was definitely rejected in the 1980s. The main roads to Kandersteg and Goppenstein have been part of National Road 6 since 2020.

Until 2020, the A6 between Biel / Bienne and Schönbühl was not a national road section. It was owned by the Canton of Bern. The previously numberless cantonal motorway between Schönbühl and Lyss Nord is now signposted as the A6. The same was true for the non-directional cantonal road between Lyss Nord and Biel / Bienne. Today the autostrasse leads into the city of Biel and will be connected with the expansion of the A5 motorway at the Port junction via the Brüggmoos junction.
