Course of the road

The main road 2b or Kantonstrasse K2b extends from wells SZ at the station until after Küssnacht . Gersau , Vitznau , Weggis and Greppen are also located on the 2b . In Brunnen and Weggis, the 2b bypasses the town centers, in Küssnacht the so-called southern bypass is under discussion. 2b is used by lines 2 and 2E of Auto AG Schwyz at different intervals.

meaning

The 2b forms a branch of Hauptstrasse 2 , which leads from Küssnacht via Arth , Goldau , Lauerz , Seewen , Ibach to Brunnen. The merger of the two roads in Brunnen is currently still at the train station, but after the planned construction of the very controversial Axen road tunnel, which was recently rejected by the Cantonal Council, it will come to the current motorway junction at Brunnen (north).

The road is particularly important for individual traffic between Weggis and Küssnacht, otherwise it is heavily used, especially for tourism. There is a weight limit on the route. Heavy traffic runs on the A4 motorway .

Falling rocks

The main road 2b is often hit by rockfalls or landslides. The Gersau - Vitznau section was therefore closed several times. There the road was carved into the sloping terrain profile. In Fallenbach, the westernmost tip of Well, between Brunnen and Gersau, a protective gallery was built near the Eichwald . This area is mainly hit by landslides, as several streams flowing from Urmiberg to Lake Lucerne cross the road layout.

Bypassing wells

A highly controversial issue is the bypassing of Brunnen, namely Luzernerstrasse. It leads from the train station to the valley station of the cable car on the Urmiberg and is actually supposed to relieve the Bahnhofstrasse and the central part of the Gersauerstrasse. This works in traffic in the direction of Brunnen – Gersau – Küssnacht, but in the opposite direction people drive through the village despite the signs because Luzernerstrasse has no right of way at the train station. A roundabout would remedy this problem, but the construction of one was repeatedly rejected or was not taken up by the municipality. In autumn 2011, construction work began on a roundabout on the station square in Brunnen.

Küssnacht bypass

The so-called southern bypass of Küssnacht is a major point of contention. After the completion of Greppen, it should lead to the Küssnacht motorway junction and relieve the village of individual traffic.
