The main road 21 is a main road in Switzerland .
This road begins at the French border in Saint-Gingolph on the south bank of Lake Geneva , runs west past the confluence of the Rhone into the lake through the Rhone valley to the south to Martigny and ends at the Great St. Bernhard on the Italian border.
On the section near Aigle and Martigny there is a faster connection for part of the road traffic, the A9 motorway , although it does not always run parallel to main road 21.

The road begins in Saint-Gingolph . It is the continuation of the Départemental road D 1005 coming from Évian-les-Bains .
From the mouth of the Rhone into Lake Geneva , the road runs along the Valais side of the Rhone, while main road 9 runs along the Vaud side. At Massongex near Bex , the road crosses the Rhone and thus reaches the Vaudois side, where it meets the main road 9. Shortly afterwards, at Saint-Maurice , the Rhone is crossed again and the Valais reached. From now on, the street remains on this side. Both main roads are united to Martigny. While road 9 continues to Sion , road 21 branches off in Martigny and leads via Orsières to the Great St. Bernhard on the border with Italy. The pass leads to an altitude of 2469 m above sea level. On the Italian side, the road continues to Saint-Léonard , where Strada Statale 27 joins the tunnel road and continues to Aosta .
The total length of this predominantly non-directional thoroughfare is around 86 kilometers.
history
Hauptstrasse 21 was given its current course in 1970 with the reform of the numbering of the main streets. Previously, the H21 ran on today's main road 13 . From 1932 to 1970 the section from Saint-Gingolph to Massongex was part of Hauptstrasse 37 - this then continued to Saint-Maurice to Hauptstrasse 9; the section from Martigny to the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard had the number 114. Since 2020, the section between Martigny and the tunnel entrance of the Great St. Bernard has belonged to the federal government, where the main road is part of the national road 21.
