Map with all coordinates: The main road 8 is a numbered main road in the Swiss road network.
It leads from Eastern Switzerland to Central Switzerland. The route begins in St. Gallen Winkeln on main road 7 and leads via Herisau into Neckertal , then over the Wasserfluh (843 m) to Lichtensteig , there together with main road 16 to Wattwil , then over the 805 meter high Rickenpass to Rapperswil-Jona , via Seedamm to Pfäffikon SZ , Sattel , Schwyz , Ibach to Ingenbohl , where it joins Hauptstrasse 2 .
The entire route is 92 kilometers long. It has four lanes between Schindellegi near Wollerau and Biberbrugg near Einsiedeln.

In the Middle Ages, the Ricken Pass was used as a pilgrimage route. Since the 15th century Schwyz tried to control the land routes towards Lake Constance. Around 1695 Schwyz and the prince abbey of St. Gallen planned to build a road over the Rickenpass to connect the Catholic areas by land , bypassing the Protestant city of Zurich . After the defeat in the Toggenburg War of 1712, however, these expansion plans were not implemented. In 1788, however, a continuously drivable path was created between Central Switzerland and St. Gallen.
The Rickenstrasse between Rapperswil and Ricken was re-routed between 1828 and 1832 in the interests of the city of Rapperswil and turned into a modern highway . Between 1832 and 1835, the adjacent section from Ricken to Wattwil was also re-routed. In roadway regulations in 1834 Rickenstrasse "of Botsberg, community was Flawyl , by Rindal, according Lütisburg , Lichtensteig , Wattwyl , St. Gallenkappel and Rapperschwyl " than under Article 3b "second home and commercial street Classe" classified.
In 2020 the section between St. Gallen and Herisau was handed over to the federal government, the main road there has since been part of the national road 25.
future
As part of the Urmiberg development axis , a new main road is being built between Schwyz station and Brunnen station. So far, main roads 2 and 8 between these two poles have had the same route via Ibach and the A4 connection Brunnen Nord. The new street is then assigned to one of the two numbers, the current route would then keep the other, so that the routing of the route is broken up.
