The main road 15 is an important main street Switzerland and runs from the border at Bietingen (Germany) Thayngen, Schaffhausen , Kleinandelfingen, Henggart, Winterthur and Bauma to Rapperswil SG.

history

Between 1832 and 1850, the Canton of Zurich invested several million francs in road construction. During these years the main road (first class road) Winterthur - Feuerthalen, which cost 386,442 francs, and the country road (second class road) from Winterthur via Wald to Rüti, which cost 551,556 francs. In 1846 alone, 70,000 francs were spent on road construction between Wald and Rüti.

Since 1858, the adjoining section of the route in the canton of Sankt Gallen has also been considered state road 21.

course

Hauptstrasse 15 begins on the border between Bietingen (Germany) and Thayngen (Switzerland) in the canton of Schaffhausen. It consists of three sections:

Between the border and Thayngen it runs parallel to the A4 running south, although it has only a minor traffic function between Thayngen and Schaffhausen-Herblingen, as the A4 running parallel in this section does not require a vignette and is released for cyclists on the cycle path.

Between Schaffhausen and Winterthur, it also runs parallel to the A4, although between Oerlingen and Aesch it runs for around 8–9 km, mostly only around 10 m away from it. At Andelfingen the road crosses the Thur on the second Weinland Bridge . The direct connection between Hengart and Hettlingen was torn down after the completion of the A4 in this section and the H15 has followed a longer route here since then.

From Winterthur it runs independently again in the Tösstal via Turbenthal, Bauma, Wald and Rüti to Rapperswil SG.

Classification of main road 15 to national road 4

At the federal level, a new version of the “Federal Decree on the National Road Network” of June 21, 1960 is being drawn up under the title “Further development of the national road network” (WEN). As part of the consultation process, the Federal Council invited the cantons to comment in mid-2008.

The so-called "New Network Decision" provides for the adaptation of the road network in the canton of Schaffhausen to the real transit traffic flows. The national road 4, which ends at the border crossing in Oberbargen, is not taken from any high-performance road on the German side, the transit traffic in the direction of Stuttgart is handled via the cantonal Hauptstrasse 15 (called J15), via the border crossing Thayngen, and there from the German federal road 34 , which leads to Federal highway 81 leads.

In a federal referendum on February 12, 2017, the people and the cantons adopted the federal resolution on the creation of a National Road and Agglomeration Transport Fund (NAF). As part of the NAF, 400 km of cantonal roads will also be added to the national road network. In the canton of Schaffhausen, Hauptstrasse 15 (J15) is expected to be upgraded from the Mutzentäli junction to the Thayngen / Bietingen border crossing to national road 4 on January 1, 2020, and today's N4 from the Schaffhausen Schweizersbild junction to the Oberbargen / Neuhaus am Randen border crossing to the cantonal one Main road H4 classified.

In its statement, the canton of Schaffhausen expressed its fundamental agreement with the project, and the Schaffhausen cantonal council unanimously adopted the statement on September 15, 2008 (69: 0 votes). Since the cantonal constitution also requires a referendum for comments in the event of the planned addition of a canton road to the national road network , this was held on November 30, 2008 and also confirmed with 88.9% yes-votes (23,974: 2,988 votes).

Vignette requirement

The main road 15 between the Schaffhausen Herblingen junction and the Mutzentäli junction requires a vignette. On the other hand, the rest of the route between the Thayngen / Bietingen border crossing and the aforementioned junction can be driven without a motorway vignette.
