The two Weinland Bridges span the Thur in the Zürcher Weinland near Kleinandelfingen and Andelfingen . Today the A4 motorway leads over the first Weinland bridge from 1958 and Hauptstrasse 15 over the second bridge from 2000 . As part of the planned full expansion of the A4 into a four-lane motorway, the Federal Roads Office FEDRO plans to build a third wine country bridge from 2018 at the earliest.

First Weinland Bridge

history

construction

Covered wooden bridge from 1815 over the Thur

The old covered wooden bridge from 1815 over the Thur near Andelfingen was no longer sufficient for the growing road traffic in the 1950s. The building department of the canton of Zurich therefore announced a public competition for the construction of a bridge over the Thur valley in 1954. This should form the core of the planned bypass road of the district capital Andelfingen as part of Hauptstrasse 15. 21 projects were submitted, 12 of which were for post-tensioned bridges , 5 for arched bridges and 4 for steel girder bridges . The jury decided in favor of the prestressed concrete bridge for aesthetic reasons.

Expansion and maintenance

When the A4 motorway from Schaffhausen to Kleinandelfingen was built in the 1960s, this national road led to the Weinland Bridge on the north side. Main street 15 was connected to the south side until 2000.

In 1991 and 1992 the bridge was renovated and the metal bridge railings were replaced with new concrete parapets. The sidewalks were also removed in favor of hard shoulders.

As part of the expansion of the line from Benken to Kleinandelfingen (up to the Weiland bridge) to a four-lane mini-highway without a hard shoulder, the first Weinland bridge with a "belly" was widened to 3 lanes. The expanded line was opened in October 2010.

construction

The first wine land bridge is a prestressed concrete girder bridge m with three bars with a constant height of 4, on the four fields through . The spacing between the pillars is 57 + 78 + 88 + 66 m. The carriageway has a width of 16.2 m. The plate protrudes over the external beams by 2.5 m in the shape of a console and has a slope of 3.25 percent. The bridge cuts the Thur at an angle of 50 degrees; In addition, the bridge on the left bank turns from the straight into a curve of 500 m radius. The three supporting yokes consist of two pillars each with a hexagonal cross-section. The bridge originally had a sidewalk and metal bridge railings on both sides.

The superstructure of the prestressed concrete bridge was built according to the BBRV system. Construction was carried out in three stages, which meant that the complex falsework could be used three times.

The first Weinland Bridge was groundbreaking in its time for modern bridge construction in Switzerland and aroused the interest of numerous experts from Switzerland and abroad.

Second Weinland Bridge

history

In the foreground the second Weinland Bridge

In 1996 the A4 section from Henggart to the A1 motorway in Winterthur was opened. In 2000 the last gap on the A4 between the first Weinland Bridge and Henggart was closed. Thus, the A4 from the Swiss border to Winterthur could be used continuously as a two-lane road. The A4 between Andelfingen and Henggart was built on the main road 15. At the same time, the new Hauptstrasse 15 was built over a two and a half year construction period. The core of this new main road is the second Weinland Bridge to the west of the first Weinland Bridge. In addition to regional traffic and bicycle traffic, this bridge also serves as an alternative route in the event that the A4 is closed.

construction

The second Weinland Bridge is 339 meters long and weighs 800 tons. It was created as a steel composite structure .

Third vineyard bridge

The current state of development of the A4 on the 8.6-kilometer section of the A4 between Kleinandelfingen and the Winterthur-Nord junction - without structural separation of the two lanes - no longer meets today's standards. The Federal Roads Office FEDRO is therefore planning an expansion project. This is based on the principles of the general project from 1973, which has already been approved. As originally planned, the carriageway is to be extended to four lanes with directional separation and probably with emergency lanes. In summer 2013, the Federal Council decided to start the expansion project in the second tranche of removing bottlenecks on the national road network.

In October 2014, the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) presented a model to the municipal administration in Kleinandelfingen of how the Weinland bridges should be expanded as part of the full expansion. For static reasons and in view of its lifespan, the first Weinland Bridge cannot be extended to four lanes with hard shoulder. The current status of planning therefore provides for the construction of a third Weinland Bridge east of the first Weinland Bridge. The new bridge will be used for the north lanes, the old one will be used for the south lanes. The public edition for the new bridge is expected to take place in spring 2015. The construction costs are expected to be around CHF 20 million - 7% of the total cost estimate for the full expansion.
