history

Castle and market town of Andelfingen on an engraving by Matthäus Merian , 1642

The oldest finds in Andelfingen are Neolithic stone axes. Bronze Age pottery was discovered on Bollen , where there was also a settlement from the 12th century BC. Could be localized.

As early as 1844, several skeletons were lifted from a gravel pit. They can probably be assigned to the Hallstatt period . Two graves from the Latène period with rich furnishings caused a sensation in 1911 because a whole cemetery with a total of 29 burials was discovered during further investigations. The grave was built on the 4th – 3rd Century BC Assigned.

Remnants of the wall under today's church allow the conclusion that there was a settlement there in the 8th century. In the late Middle Ages, the Andelfingen church was of regional importance and looked after several branch offices.

Andelfingen Castle belonged to the sons of Emperor Albrecht , who pledged it to the Lords of Landenberg in 1377 . In 1434 the Hohen-Landenbergers sold Andelfingen to Zurich.

As the location of a Thur bridge , which was expanded in 1324, Andelfingen was a regional center as a customs and trading center. In 1799 the bridge was destroyed in the war. In 1814 a new wooden bridge was built by Hans Konrad Stadler.

Attractions

The publicly accessible park of the castle, which served as a retirement home until 1999 and is now a residential and office building, is a fine example of 19th century garden architecture.
