The Weinfelden station is a railway station in the town of Weinfelden and the largest railway junction of Canton Thurgau . Trains of the SBB and Thurbo operate, which in addition to long-distance trains run every half hour, also operate lines of the S-Bahn systems from Zurich and St. Gallen .

history

The planning for the Weinfelden train station began in 1853. Weinfelden was defined as one of 13 stations along the Bodenseebahn from Romanshorn to Oerlikon . Immediately afterwards the construction machines drove up. After almost two years of construction, the station was opened on May 16, 1855 together with the first leg from Romanshorn to Winterthur by the Swiss Northeast Railway . The station building, planned by Jakob Friedrich Wanner , who had already designed the station buildings of Winterthur and Zurich main station , was completed in 1863 and 1864.

In 1876 the Bischofszellerbahn was opened to Gossau SG , which officially has its starting point in Weinfelden, but only branches off the Bodenseebahn at Sulgen station. In 1902 the station came into the possession of the newly founded SBB. It was expanded to become a crossing station from 1909 when the construction of what was then the Mittelthurgau Railway began on its route from Wil SG via Weinfelden to Kreuzlingen station . After only two years of construction, the line was opened to traffic on December 18, 1911.

In 1970/1971 the station building was supplemented by a toilet / service building by the architect Max Vogt .

In 1994, MThB, the Seehas, put a cross-border Bodensee S-Bahn into operation, which traveled the entire MThB main route from Weinfelden via Konstanz to Engen without having to change trains . This connection became history with the MThB liquidation and takeover by the SBB subsidiary Thurbo in 2002 and was divided into three Thurbo regional train connections Engen – Konstanz, Konstanz – Weinfelden and Weinfelden – Wil. The former MThB depot, which has been in the hands of SBB since the takeover, was given up in 2007.

With a view to the Bahn 2000 , the station underwent a fundamental renovation in 2002. The old station building was refurbished and provided with an SBB travel center and a snack bar, platforms and platform roofs were completely rebuilt. In the course of the renovation, the artist Thomas Rutherfoord designed an art in the building in the form of shiny dark red color relief based on a copper beech tree in front of the train station that had previously been felled for the renovation .

The station complex comprises five tracks, four platform tracks and one through track:

  • Track 1: Long-distance traffic to Romanshorn or Konstanz, S5 to St. Gallen, Regio to Konstanz
  • Track 2: through track for shunting and freight traffic
  • Track 3: long-distance traffic to Biel or Brig (IR or IC)
  • Track 4: S30 to Winterthur, S7 to Rorschach, Regio to Wil or Konstanz
  • Track 5: S8 to Pfäffikon SZ, Regio to Wil, in the morning and from noon to evening S to St.Gallen

Tracks 1 and 5 are on a side platform, tracks 3 and 4 form a central platform. Tracks 4 and 5 have a lane change in the middle of the platform so that they can be occupied by two trains at the same time, which can also overtake each other. In practice, this is mainly used on track 4.

The express trains in the direction of Konstanz and Romanshorn run on platform 1 and in the direction of Frauenfeld on platform 3. Most of the S-Bahn trains run on platforms 4 and 5. The bus departure points are on the north side of the station on platform 1.

Expansion and modernization

Rail services should be expanded throughout the canton by 2019. A fast S-Bahn is to run on the Weinfelden - Kreuzlingen route in the future. To do this, it will be necessary to expand the route to 2 lanes and to expand the two train stations in Weinfelden and Kreuzlingen.

A total of 25 million Swiss francs are to be invested at Weinfelden train station. The platform to track 5 in the west is to be extended by around 200 meters. In addition, a lift to the central platform is to be built. An additional platform and the widening of the central barrier, which according to commuters are much too narrow, is no longer planned.
