The Frauenfeld station is the station of the Thurgau cantonal capital Frauenfeld . It is served by long-distance and regional trains of the SBB and its subsidiary Thurbo as well as the Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn and belongs to the network of the S-Bahn Zurich and the S-Bahn St. Gallen .

history

Frauenfeld station (1963)

The station was established in 1853 as one of 13 stations on the planned Bodenseebahn from Romanshorn to Oerlikon . After two years of planning and construction, it was opened when the first stage of the Bodenseebahn from Romanshorn to Winterthur was put into operation. The architect of the station building was Jakob Friedrich Wanner , who was also responsible for the construction of the Zurich HB , Winterthur and Weinfelden stations .

In 2009, Frauenfeld won the FLUX award for the Bahnhof 2000 concept , which included the separation of individual and public transport. In this project, the station square was chosen as a traffic junction and private transport was relocated to the first underground roundabout in Europe to enable rapid transfers. The new, 420 meter long central platform was spanned with the second longest platform roof in Switzerland.

In 2008, the SBB began a pilot project to use train station mentors to look after passengers at the train station, as well as in those in Thun , Liestal , Rüti ZH and Yverdon-les-Bains .

SBB tracks
Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn at Frauenfeld train station

The station is divided into two parts, the SBB station and the station square including the FW stop. The SBB part comprises five tracks, three of which are connected to a platform, and two more serve as through or stabling tracks for shunting and freight traffic. Passenger traffic is generally handled on tracks 1 and 2.

  • Platform 1: Trains in the direction of Winterthur Zurich
  • Track 2: trains in the direction of Weinfelden
  • Track 3: For relief and replacement trains ( Openair Frauenfeld ), as well as shunting traffic
  • Platform 4 & 5: shunting and freight traffic
  • Platform 11 & 12: Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn to Wil

Track 1 is on the side platform with the station building, tracks 2 and 3 form a central platform.

The former locomotive depot now houses a branch of the construction services belonging to the infrastructure division.

The two tracks 11 & 12 are on Bahnhofplatz. They have no platform roofs, but one track has had a platform since 2013.

The station building includes various shops that have been rented by chains such as Depot or Avec. There is also an SBB travel center in the train station.

Expansion and modernization

The Seerückentunnel is a tunnel mentioned in the “Bodan-Rail 2020” concept, which would lead from Frauenfeld to Kreuzlingen. Together with the Überlingerseetunnel and a new line to Ravensburg, the journey between Zurich and Ulm would be shortened considerably.
