The station train is located in the main town of the same name Canton train . The city is conveniently located at the fork of the Zurich - Lucerne and Zurich - Gotthard railway lines . The station is a real wedge station . The InterRegio reaches Zurich or Lucerne in 25 minutes.

It is the main hub of the Zug urban railway and is also connected to the Zurich S-Bahn network. It provides a connection to the dense public transport network . The station square of the station, which opened on November 28, 2003, is a junction in the Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe (ZVB) transport network , which has 285 stops and a total route length of 197 km.

history

The first train station in Zug was built between 1863 and 1864 on today's Bundesplatz by the architect Jakob Friedrich Wanner . It was a dead end station that could only be reached from the direction of Cham and Knonau. The trains could be turned with an additional track triangle. When the railway lines to Zurich via Thalwil and Arth-Goldau were built in 1897 , the station had to be relocated to the site of today's wedge station. The first station building was dismantled and rebuilt in Zurich Wollishofen .

Station building

Between 2001 and 2004 a newly designed station building was built in the city center for around 65 million Swiss francs. The building area is approximately 6500 m². Every day around 20,000 people flock to the triangular train station, one of the ten largest in Switzerland .

Viewed from top to bottom, the building consists of three office floors, a shop area at track level and one at city level, as well as the basement used as a storage area. There are a total of 14 shops in the station. A new passage was specially built for the station building so that pedestrians can get to the station concourse. The separate Grafenau and Metalli quarters are now easier to reach. New shelters were built for cyclists. The newly created station square serves as a turning area for the buses. There is also an Internet connection via wireless LAN at certain locations within the train station .

At dusk, the station building is illuminated by the light transport light installation by the artist James Turrell until 11 p.m. For this purpose, fluorescent tubes were mounted on the southern glass front , which can produce the colors red, green and blue and the resulting mixed colors. Since there can be technical problems with the control of the lighting elements in the event of prolonged cold, the system is switched off in such situations. The station received a Brunel Award on October 19, 2005 for the light installation and the architecture .

Bus transport

Zug train station is a central transfer point in the Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe network . A total of four stops are located in the area around the station to make it accessible:

  • Dammstrasse (train station) at platform 7: Line 16 to Steinhausen Sennweid
  • Metalli (train station) on Baarerstrasse: Lines 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 14, 16
  • Landis + Gyr (train station) on Gubelstrasse: Lines 6, 7, 11, 16
  • Bahnhofplatz at the entrance building: Lines 1, 2, 5, 12, 13, 14

The lines ending at the station all go to Bahnhofplatz, where there is a turning area. Some lines stop at more than one of the four train station stops. The Metalli stop is divided into Metalli (East) for buses in the direction of Baar / Landis + Gyr and Metalli (West) for buses in the direction of Postplatz, while the West stop has two parking spaces in front of and after the T-junction with Metallstrasse.

Track system

The track system comprises seven passenger tracks, one of which is a head track, while the other six are through tracks. Overall, there is a side platform (track 7) and three central platforms, one of which is in a wedge shape (track 3/4) and one partially represents a side platform because of the headline status of track 1. Use by passenger transport is usually handled according to the following scheme:

  • Track 1: head track, serves the S24 to Zurich-Winterthur (-Schaffhausen-Thayngen)
  • Track 2: ICN / EC / IR to Arth-Goldau-Tessin, S2 direction Walchwil
  • Track 3: ICN / EC / IR to Zurich HB, S2 to Baar Lindenpark
  • Track 4: IR to Lucerne, S1 to Rotkreuz and via Lucerne to Sursee
  • Track 5: IR to Zurich HB / Zurich Airport, S1 to Baar
  • Track 6: is mainly used as a siding.
  • Track 7: S5 to Affoltern-Zurich-Uster-Rapperswil-Pfäffikon SZ
