The station Flüelen is the station of the municipality Flüelen in the Swiss canton of Uri . It is primarily known as a transfer station between the Gotthard Railway and the shipping services on Lake Lucerne , but also for its avant-garde architecture. It is owned by the Swiss Federal Railways and is also served by their long-distance and regional trains.

history

The beginnings

Initially, the planned route of the Gotthard Railway provided for the bypassing of Flüelen in the mountain, which was also approved and subsidized by the village. With this idea, the station was planned on a lake embankment west of the village. However, due to a lack of financial resources, the project was changed so that the tracks should leave the mountain as in the first project at Gruonbach between Flüelen and Sisikon, but then cross the village parallel to Axenstrasse and head towards Erstfeld. The construction work began in 1879. In Flüelen, the implemented variant did not initially meet with goodwill, because the village was removed from the previously existing direct access to the lake through embankments and dam construction. The station building was built in 1880 and 1881. During the construction period, the village experienced a heyday, the population was 1425 in 1880, while in 1888, six years after completion, it was just 730.

After the opening

After the Gotthard Railway opened in 1882, Flüelen climbed relatively quickly to the express train stop in the Uri capital Altdorf , as its train station was relatively far outside the village. From 1906 to 1951 the 3.1 km long Altdorf – Flüelen tram ran between the train station and the Tell monument in Altdorf. In the 1920s the Gotthard Railway was electrified and in 1922 it was expanded to double-track between Immensee and Brunnen . The expansion of the section between Brunnen and Flüelen was also up for discussion. In the course of these expansion ideas, the people of Flüel wanted to build a village bypass after all, if only for the second track. Both ideas fizzled out. In 1942, the old station building was demolished as part of the double-track expansion between Sisikon and Flüelen.

In November 1944, the new station building was built according to plans by SBB architect Alfred Ramseyer-Fieg , which caused a sensation for its modernity, which was unusual for the time. In 1991 the central platform and underpasses were built. The level crossings between Axenstrasse and the ship station disappeared.

As a result of weak demand, SBB decided to close the ticket counter in March 2016. In return, the station experienced an upswing with the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel: It became a stop for several EuroCity and InterCity trains.

outlook

The SBB and the canton of Uri are planning to stop the long-distance trains in the newly expanded Altdorf canton station from 2021 . As a result, Flüelen is only served by S-Bahn trains. It is also planned to route long-distance traffic through the planned Axentunnel and thus bypass the village of Flüelen.

Reception building

The station building, built in 1944, includes, in addition to the main building, a semicircular extension to the north and a clock tower that houses the staircase. The building is a monument of national importance , mainly because of its unusual modernity. It also included a picture signal box. The station was immortalized on a postage stamp and the German model railway accessories manufacturer Faller had a model of the station in its range. Today it is painted yellow on the facade. The painting Föhnwacht by Uri painter Heinrich Danioth is in the waiting room .

The idea of ​​a painting in the new train station emerged as early as the project phase in 1942. The Stans sculptor Heinrich von Matt had the idea of ​​adding a painterly work of art to the waiting room. Danioth's project planning dragged on for over a year, because the search for an ideal topic turned out to be difficult. Initially, Danioth considered the importance of Flüelen as a transshipment point for the Gotthard transit, but later changed his idea to the subject of the Bay of Fishermen . Two days before the submission, however, Danioth changed the design plan again and now produced a project on the subject of the foehn , which is omnipresent in the Uri Reuss valley. The picture was inaugurated at the same time as the train station in 1944.

The facility comprises four through tracks, three of which have a platform. The trains that end in Flüelen stop at the house platform (platform 1). There are currently three pairs of S2 trains in the evening hours that will not be extended to Erstfeld . All other continuing trains stop at the central platform. On track 2 those in the direction of Brunnen , on track 3 those in the direction of Altdorf . The fourth track has no platform and serves as a passing track. After the train station there are various sidings to gravel loading points on the lake.

The Flüelen train station is served by the SBB from both long-distance and regional trains ( Stadtbahn Zug ) every hour, which means that they are superimposed every half hour. The Interregio trains overlap at hourly intervals. Until 2008, a few Eurocity trains from Milan still stopped at marginal hours , but they were canceled when the ETR 470 was switched to an extended interregional hourly service. Since the timetable change on December 10, 2011, an Intercity Tilting Train (ICN) from Chiasso to Zurich has stopped during the morning rush hour . When the Gotthard Base Tunnel started operating , Flüelen also served as a stop for three Eurocity trains and two ICN trains. These stops will be relocated to the canton railway station in Altdorf after completion .

Regional traffic

The S2 will be extended to Erstfeld by means of the replacement bus Flüelen Bahnhof - Altdorf Bahnhof - Erstfeld Bahnhof . The S2 runs twice in the morning from Erstfeld and twice in the evening to Erstfeld.

Bus transport

There are two bus stops in the vicinity of the train station. From the bus stop Flüelen station on the station square run exclusively PostAuto courses. They offer connections over the Klausen Pass to Linthal , Isenthal and Stans . From the Flüelen Hauptplatz stop on the other side of the train tracks, which is connected to the train station with an underpass, Auto AG Uri runs to Flüelen Gruonbach and Altdorf - Schattdorf (- Erstfeld - Amsteg - Göschenen )

Worth mentioning

  • The Flüeler Bahnhof was published in 1947 on the so-called federal party donation stamp of the Swiss Post. Back then, the stamp was worth 40 cents, of which 10 went to the national donation.
