The Altdorf – Flüelen tram was a tram in the Swiss canton of Uri that connected Altdorf with Flüelen . Auto AG Uri emerged from the tram company after the end of operations .

history

Share for CHF 250 in the Altdorf-Flüelen AG tram from February 1, 1906

As early as 1895 there were plans by the Altdorf electricity company to build a tram to Flüelen station in order to better connect the canton's capital to long-distance rail traffic. It was not until November 14, 1905, however, that the Altdorf – Flüelen tram was founded and construction began immediately. The 3.1 km long route, opened on August 25, 1906, began at the Tell Monument in Altdorf and led through Tellsgasse, Herrengasse and Flüelerstrasse to Flüelen station on the Gotthard Railway . The railway depot was at the corner of Herrengasse and Flüelerstrasse . The only turnout of the single-track route was - next to the terminals - at the Moosbad. The journey time was twelve minutes. In summer the railcars ran every 15 minutes, in winter every 30 minutes. There were four railcars and two open summer sidecars available to the railway . The latter were only used when needed.

Conversion to bus operation

In 1947 operations had to be temporarily suspended due to a lack of electricity. Due to the worn out systems, including the vehicles, from the early days of the railway, and the reduced number of journeys due to increasing motorization, the railway was shut down on May 20, 1951 and subsequently canceled. The tram operation was replaced by bus operation and the route network was expanded. The Altdorf – Flüelen AG tram was converted into the Uri Auto AG , which was used as a bus depot until 2009. The Altdorf – Flüelen route is now part of bus route 1.
