population

Population development

The population reached 3000 in the middle of the 18th century. With the Helvetic Republic of 1798 Altdorf experienced a number of serious setbacks. On the one hand, the subject territories were lost at that time and the competitive situation in transit traffic came to a head. On the other hand, Altdorf was the scene of armed events between the Urners, French, Austrians and Russians in 1799. The so-called French era led to enormous burdens with looting, billeting and requisitions. The Altdorf village fire of April 5, 1799 was catastrophic, which reduced the main stain to rubble and ashes within hours. Parts of the population left Altdorf and settled in neighboring communities. The population stagnated in the first half of the 19th century. After that, it grew strongly until 1880 (1850–1880: +37.6%). In the 1880s, it shrank massively by 12.5% as a result of the economic crisis and the subsequent collapse in the widespread home trade. A major growth spurt followed between 1888 and 1920 (1888–1920: + 63.8%). The reasons for this were the connection to the railway (Gotthard line) and the settlement of industrial companies such as the Altdorf ammunition factory and the Swiss wire and rubber works. After a phase of stagnation in the 1920s, there was a renewed surge in growth between 1930 and 1970 (1930–1970: + 103.9%). At that time the population doubled. Many people from the upper part of the canton and from abroad immigrated during this time. During the oil crisis in the 1970s, a number of foreign residents left the place; between 1970 and 1980 Altdorf had to accept a population loss of 4.8%. Steady population growth has been observed again since the 1990s.

languages

Almost the entire population speaks Swiss German (with the Uri dialect), a dialect that belongs to the highest Alemannic dialect group . In the last census in 2000, 88.27% said German, 4.20% Serbo-Croatian and 2.48% Italian as their main language.

Religions - denominations

The population used to be fully members of the Roman Catholic Church. The denominational relationships in 2000 still show the original structure. 6,701 people were Catholic (78.46%). In addition, there were 7.19% Protestant Reformed and 3.56% Orthodox Christians, 4.50% Muslims and 2.96% non-religious. 221 people (2.59%) did not provide any information on their creed.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2014, 7,857 (86.0%) of the 9,141 residents were Swiss nationals, mostly of German-Swiss origin. The majority of the immigrants come from Italy, Turkey, Serbia-Montenegro, Croatia, Germany and Sri Lanka. At the 2000 census, 7,145 people (83.66%) were Swiss citizens; including 274 people with dual citizenship.

age structure

The community has a high proportion of middle-aged people (30–59 years; 41.48%). The proportion of people under the age of twenty of 22.71% of the local population is slightly below the proportion of people of senior age (60 years and older; 23.25%). The small number of school-age residents and the high proportion of younger senior citizens between 60 and 79 years of age are striking.

The last census in 2000 showed the following age structure:

Age 0–6 years 7-15 years 16-19 years 20-29 years 30–44 years 45–59 years 60–79 years 80 years and more

history

Altdorf around 1900

Individual finds in the municipality of Altdorf go back to the Bronze Age and accumulate from the late La Tène period . The presence of Alemanni is proven to be in the 7th century. The earliest mention of the place as Alttorf comes from the year 1223; The place name is apparently a combination of the words old and village and could indicate that a closed settlement already existed at the time of the Alemannic immigration.

Altdorf burned down in whole or in part in 1400, 1693 and 1799. On April 5, 1799 - Altdorf was occupied by the French - 400 buildings were affected, including 225 residential buildings. After the last-mentioned incident, the Uri town hall was rebuilt in 1805/08 by architect Niklaus Purtschert.

In 1899 the Klausenpassstrasse was opened, which leads from Altdorf through the Schächental and over the Klausenpass (1948 m) to Linthal in the canton of Glarus .

According to the play by Friedrich Schiller , Altdorf is the scene of William Tell's apple shot . After the latter refused to salute Gessler's hat on the pole, Gessler forced him to shoot an apple from his son's head. This is said to have taken place on the Altdorf market square, where the Tell monument , a bronze statue of Richard Kissling from Zurich showing Tell and his son, was erected in 1895 at the foot of an old tower (Türmli) . In 1899 a theater (Tellspielhaus) was opened near the place with the sole purpose of staging Friedrich Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell .

Culture

theatre

Altdorf has two public theaters and several theater groups:

  • theater (uri) Tellspielhaus Altdorf: The theater (uri) dates from around 1865 and served as a community hall until 1924. In 1925 it was expanded to the current size to become the Tellspielhaus Altdorf. The focus was primarily on the performance of the play "Wilhelm Tell" by Friedrich Schiller. In 1999 the theater (uri) became the property of the Altdorf community. This transferred the operation of the house to the forum theater (uri). The theater (uri) is today the largest cultural site in the canton and occupies an important place in the central Swiss cultural scene.
  • Cellar theater in Vogelsang: Small theater, founded in 1969. Various styles of events take place in two old cellar vaults. The season runs from September to June and includes 25 to 30 events.
  • forum musikbühne uri: The forum musikbühne uri, founded in 2005, maintains the operetta tradition that was temporarily buried in Uri and performs musicals and operettas at an irregular rhythm.
  • Eigägwächs theater group: The Eigägwächs theater group is a diverse group of theater enthusiasts. There is a close connection with the children's and youth theater group “Märlibühne Altdorf”, which has performed numerous plays since 1988.
  • Theater group Momänt & Co .: The theater group Momänt & Co. was founded in 1992. As a rule, it shows committed, demanding folk theater every two years.

Museums

  • Historical Museum Uri : The Historical Museum Uri was built in 1906 by the architect Wilhelm Hanauer, Lucerne. In 1938 a weapons hall was added to the building. In the years 1998–2000 the historical restoration of the old building as well as a renovation and expansion took place. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there is at least one temporary exhibition every year.
  • House for Art Uri : The House for Art Uri was opened in 2004. It offers space for contemporary exhibitions on three floors, in an extension hall and in a spacious courtyard. In addition to the national exhibition program, the work of the Uri artist Heinrich Danioth (1896–1953) is particularly honored.
  • Church Treasure Museum St. Martin: The precious church treasure of the parish St. Martin Altdorf has been accessible to the public in the parish center since 1982.
  • Türmli Altdorf: The Türmli is a medieval residential tower and was converted into a town hall campanile in the early 16th century . The public pillory was also set up at the Türmli . In 1895, the Tell monument by Richard Kissling was inaugurated in front of the Türmli . The Türmli has been open to the public since 2011 and contains a small exhibition.

movie theater

  • Kino Leuzinger : A cinema has existed in Altdorf since 1925. At that time, the cinema pioneer Willy Leuzinger from Rapperswil opened the first permanent cinema in the canton of Uri in the Tellspielhaus. In 1964 a new building was built. The modern, elegant cinema with 490 seats underwent a gentle renovation in 2008.

Library

The Uri Cantonal Library is the general public library in Uri and offers a wide range of media. At the same time, the canton library collects and indexes local publications of all kinds. The Uri canton library is supported by a foundation. The main donors are the canton of Uri and the municipality of Altdorf.

Attractions

The village is characterized by magnificent mansions and palazzi erected by returning mercenary leaders . The manor house Im Eselmätteli (1684–1666) , for example, is well preserved with rich interior fittings from the late Baroque and Rococo periods .

A special ensemble is the church district, consisting of the parish church of St. Martin , the ossuary chapel of St. Anna , the Ölberg chapel and the cemetery.

Above the village is the oldest Capuchin monastery in Switzerland, which is also the first Capuchin monastery to be built north of the Alps, from 1581. In 2009 the last Capuchins left the monastery. Today the Altdorf Capuchin Monastery is a cultural monastery . Capuchins were also represented in the village from 1677 to 2004. A subsequent use is being sought for the Altdorf Capuchin convent .
