Dominik Epp

Dominik Epp (* December 23, 1776 in Altdorf ; † June 11, 1848 ibid) was a Swiss landowner and politician and served as a soldier in Spanish .

Life

Dominik Epp was born as the son of Karl Anton Maria Epp, a land clerk.

He attended the Latin school in Pfäfers and was at the college (grammar school) in Bellinzona . After completing his schooling, like his father, he joined the royal Spanish service as a soldier. From 1805 to 1807 he worked as a recruiting officer for the Spanish service in Schwyz and Altdorf. On September 11, 1809, he was promoted from lieutenant to captain , and he was given command of the 1st company of the 2nd battalion in the Swiss Betschart regiment .

After he returned to his homeland, he worked as a politician and in 1809 became governor of Uri ; he held this office until 1839. From 1813 to 1815, he was state governor and 1815-1817 Landammann the canton of Uri ; In 1815 he took as an envoy to the Diet in part and signed on behalf of his canton in federal contract which the testimony . In 1815 he was an intermediary between Obwalden and Nidwalden when in 1815 the monastery and the valley community Engelberg separated from Nidwalden and joined Obwalden. The mediation revealed that the newly connected area was an exclave of Obwalden.

He called the Sonderbund illegal and feared that it would tear the Confederation apart. It was only when the Sonderbund fell that his prediction proved correct, and he was then elected as the only former leader in the new government. From 1847 to 1848 he was Councilor . In May 1848 he asked to be dismissed from his post for health reasons.

Dominik Epp was married to Josefa Magdalena Schmid (* 1778; † 1821), a daughter of the wealthy Josef Maria Schmid (* 1740; † 1813), since September 8, 1802. The wedding took place without the consent of the father-in-law, but was later accepted by him through the mediation of clergy. This made Dominik Epp a landowner. His son, Dominik Epp, later became a councilor and mayor, and his grandson, Dominik Epp, became a colonel and organized the defense system in the canton of Uri.
