The Kantonsbibliothek Uri is the Kantonsbibliothek of Uri in Altdorf ; therefore it is public. It also functions as Altdorf's school and community library. In some cases, we also work with other institutions.

history

On March 8, 1953, the Society for the Promotion of a Cantonal Library, which had the aim of building a cantonal library in which it wanted to involve the state in the long term, was founded by the state archivist Hans Schuler.

In 1955 the corridor of the State Archives was made available for the library. After it was founded, the KBU was soon able to move to its own premises at Tellsgasse 5 in Altdorf and the lending service was started, although the library was still privately operated at that time. The original holdings were literature which was handed over to the canton library by the canton of Uri, the state archive, the society for library promotion and the various municipalities. In 1971 the cantonal library became a public foundation (financing: canton 70%, municipality Altdorf 20% and library society 10%).

In 1973 the first full-time librarian was employed. In 1975 Hans Stadler took over the management. For reasons of space, the magazines were spread over three locations. In 1982 the building at Bahnhofstrasse 13 was acquired by the canton in order to create more space for the library and the state archive. After a proposal for the conversion was rejected in a referendum in 1984, a majority of voters approved the modified project in 1986. In 1987 the old Coop building at Bahnhofstrasse 13 was rebuilt so that the cantonal library and the Uri state archive could find their place in it. After the move in 1988, the state archives and the cantonal library were institutionally separated. Hans Stadler passed on the management of the cantonal library to Eliane Latzel, who previously held the position of librarian. From then on, Hans Stadler was only head of the State Archives. Electronic lending was introduced in 1992. In 2000 the Uraniensia card catalog was abolished.

In the same year, an ordinance issued by the canton stipulated that the canton would contribute 80% of the financing and thus take over the part of the patrons' association. From this point on, the patrons' association financially supported projects of the Uri Cantonal Library and no longer paid a regular contribution. Two examples: In 2006, the patrons' association sponsored carrying baskets for open access lending; In 2012, the canton library got new book trays with rollers that expanded the children's area. In 2015 Eliane Latzel left the management position and handed it over to co-management Martina Wüthrich and Carla Biasini.

At its general assembly on September 15, 2016, the patrons' association of the Uri Cantonal Library was dissolved due to a decline in membership. The Uri Cantonal Library Foundation will continue to be supported by the founders of the Canton of Uri and the Altdorf community. The Board of Trustees consists of two representatives from each of the two foundation bodies, as well as an external library specialist.

Duration

The open access holdings of the Uri Cantonal Library comprise around 35,000 media. This includes books, DVDs, audio books, maps, music CDs, and CD-ROMs. With DiBi Zentral, KBU also offers a large selection of e-media for its digital users. The e-media are in a separate catalog of the DiBiZentral network. Most of them are also shown in the online catalog of the Uri Cantonal Library.

In its cantonal function, the Uri Cantonal Library has a collecting mandate. There are around 65,000 media in the magazines. In accordance with the performance mandate of the Uri Cantonal Library, publications by Urners and publications about the Canton of Uri or its people are collected, so-called Uraniensia.

The Fintan Library, owned by Father Fintan Amstad (1888–1973), which was bequeathed to the Uri Cantonal Library, is also part of the Uraniensia collection with its 2,600 books and brochures. Most of the publications that are part of the Fintan Library date from the 15th to 20th centuries.

Another inventory held by the cantonal library is the chapter library. It includes the property of clergy from Altdorf, Bauen, Bürglen, Erstfeld, Flüelen, Göscheneralp, Gurtnellen, Hospental and Urseren. The collection of around 2,500 books is marked with the signature KAPB.

The Swiss Alpine Club of the Gotthard Region has a deposit in the Uri Cantonal Library. The holdings of the SAC include ski and hiking maps, textbooks for alpinists and everything that has to do with the mountains and their ascent. The Capuchin Library is owned by the Canton of Uri and is managed by the Cantonal Library. The books available there can be researched in the Capuchin catalog .

use

The Uri Cantonal Library is a general public library. A library card enables owners to obtain media from the open access holdings, e-media and media that can be borrowed from the magazine. Without a user ID, the customer can read magazines in the reading café and use non-borrowing works in the reading room. If a non-existent book is required, an interlibrary loan can be made.
