Cannobio (not to be confused with Canobbio in Switzerland) is an Italian commune in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region and is the holder of the Bandiera Arancione of the TCI .

geography

The municipality is located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore and is the first larger town after the border with Switzerland in Piaggio Valmara . Cannobio is located on the alluvial cone of the Cannobino river, and the Cannobina valley extends inland.

The municipality covers an area of ​​52.53 km². Cannobio include fractions Campeglio, Carmine Superiore, Carmine Inferiore, Cinzago, Formine, Marchile, Piaggio Valmara, Pianoni, Ronco, Sant'Agata, San Bartolomeo Valmara, Socraggio, Socragno and Traffiume.

history

The city name goes back to the Roman Canobinum . In 929 AD it was known with certainty that it was the seat of a curtis regia . In the Middle Ages, Cannobio was undoubtedly very successful, especially in terms of manufacture and trade, and in 1207 it received the title of Borgo .

  • Cannobio has a historic town center and is a popular destination.
  • The parish church of San Vittore with a Romanesque tower was built in the 17th century, the entrance facade dates from 1842. It houses an organ from 1837 by Luigi Maroni Biroldi from Varese .
  • The pilgrimage church of Santissima Pietà was built between 1575 and 1614, then rebuilt in 1583 by Saint Carlo Borromeo based on a design by Pietro Beretta from Brissago TI . The facade is the result of a reconstruction by Febo Bottini from 1909. The interior consists of a single nave with a rich baroque decoration.
