Baceno ( Lombard : Bascén, German earlier Betsch ) is an Italian municipality in the Valle Antigorio in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB), Piedmont region .
geography
The municipal area covers an area of 68 km² and consists of the districts Alpe Devero, Croveo, Graglia, Goglio, Osso, Uresso and Beola. The neighboring municipalities are Crodo , Formazza , Premia and Varzo and, on the Swiss side, the municipality of Binn , with which there is a municipal partnership, and the municipality of Grengiols .
history
Numerous archaeological finds, including the discovery of a head carved in stone, testify to the presence of human settlements as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Numerous other finds point to presumed villages in the entire area between the Devero and Toce rivers .
In 1039 Gualberto, Bishop of Novara , gave the canons of Santa Maria di Novara the chapel of San Gaudenzio (today the parish church of Baceno). Later expansions of the church and the grazing areas in the adjacent valleys (Bondolero, Esigo, Agaro, Devero), which are increasingly inhabited all year round, bear witness to the development of Bacenos between the 13th and 16th centuries. Baceno and Croveo were one of the four quarters of the Valle Antigorio judiciary, ruled by a Podestà .

- The monumental church of San Gaudenzio from the 13th century was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style and expanded at the beginning of the 16th century. The Renaissance portal shows the adoration of the shepherds; on the right there is a large fresco by Antonio Zanetti depicting St. Christopher. The church is a good starting point for a hike through the Uriezzo gorges .
- The parish church Natività di Maria Vergine in the district of Croveo was built between 1618 and 1641 by the emigrants of Croveo in Rome .
