Madonna del Sasso is a municipality on the west bank of Lake Orta in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .

Attractions

  • Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso (in the district of Boleto), which was built between 1725 and 1748 on a granite rock and from which one has a panoramic view over the Lago d'Orta. Above the main altar it preserves the altarpiece of the Pietà by the painter Fermo Stella da Caravaggio , signed and dated 1547. Also curious in the apse are four paintings by the painter Lorenzo Peracino also author of the painting Transito di San Giuseppe on the left altar. Also worth seeing is a wooden cross from the second half of the 17th century by the woodcarver Federico Bianchi. The church is only open to visitors when the weather is nice ( nessun sole - non aperto ).
