history

As evidence of the ancient origin of the settlement, there are several archaeological finds of tombs with coins from the time of Emperor Augustus and a large Olpe from the 1st century AD. From Belgirate, the Roman consular road connected Severiana Augusta Mediolanum (today's Milan ) with Verbannus Lacus (Verbano or Lago Maggiore ) and from here with the Simplon Pass (Latin Summo Plano).

In the Middle Ages, the Belgirate was part of the Vergante feud from which it pursued the fate of the Visconti and eventually the noble Borromeo family , who received inauguration from 1441 until the end of feudalism in the 18th century. The oldest part of the city developed around the Romanesque church of Santa Maria (called the Old Church).
