Masera is a municipality in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .
geography
The municipality covers an area of 20 km² . Masera includes the groups Carale, Casa Benvenuta, Casa del Secco, Cresta, Melezzo, Menogno, Ranco, Rivoira, Rogna and Veriago (with Ariola, Merro, Piazza, Quartavolo, Rancaldina). The neighboring municipalities are Crevoladossola , Domodossola , Druogno , Montecrestese , Santa Maria Maggiore and Trontano .
history
The first historical mentions of Masera come from documents of the 10th century and precisely in a parchment dated June 970, in which it is said that the Bishop of Novara Aupaldo gave the priest Dododei from Vogogna (feudal capital of Ossola Inferiore ) a plot of land in loco et feudo Maxerie gave; a further mention is made in 994 in a sales document. In the 12th century Masera belonged to Count Guido von Biandrate , as evidenced by a confirmation diploma from Emperor Friedrich I (HRR) 1152. After the Peace of Constance , Masera formed a jurisdiction with the Lower Ossola Valley, which was named Vicariatus Ossolae .
During the Visconti rule in Milan , Masera fell under the jurisdiction of Giovanni Visconti (Archbishop) ; after his death the territory of Novara was assigned to his nephew Galeazzo; during his reign the municipal statutes were approved; later, in 1439, Masera came under the rule of Count Vitaliano Borromeo , loyal treasurer of the Duke of Milan Filippo Maria Visconti . Under the rule of the Borromeans, Masera received a certain autonomy and was the capital of the Quattro Terre .

Attractions
- Parish Church of San Martino di Tours built in the Lombard Gothic style with three naves, built in 1883 on the site of the old church in the pure Lombard style of the 11th century; the new church was decorated by the Milanese painter Bottini, while the fresco of St. Martin above the main portal is the work of the painter A. Cotti; in the anchor of the altar at the end of the north aisle there is a wooden-painted triptych depicting Madonna col Bambino con Santi Rocco e Sebastiano , which is attributed to Sperindio Cagnoli.
- Oratory of San Rocco in the hamlet of Ranco, with precious frescoes from 1402; an old signal tower from the end of the 15th century is located near the hamlet.
