Cannero Riviera as seen from Oggiogno |
Cannero Riviera is an Italian municipality on Lake Maggiore . It is located in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola on the outskirts of the Piedmont region and is the holder of the Bandiera Arancione of the TCI .
geography
The municipality covers an area of 14.42 km² . The fractions Barbè, Cassino, Cheggio, Donego, Oggiogno, Piancassone and Ponte belong to Cannero Riviera . The place lies on the alluvial cone of the river Rio di Cannero. On the northern Lake Maggiore and especially on its eastern shore, such alluvial cones are practically the only flat spots on the otherwise rocky shore. Cannero is oriented exactly to the south, which means that it has a particularly mild climate, which is why it was given the nickname “Riviera” in 1947.
history
The parish first appears in a deed of property transfer in 985, but municipal independence comes in the 14th century. In 1524 the Sforzas destroyed the city as an area that remained loyal to the Visconti family .

Attractions
- Parish church of San Giorgio built in 1836 preserves the organ work of Felice Bossi from Turin (1850), restored by the Fratelli Marzi company from Pogno .
- Another attraction of the place is a painted stone, the painting of which makes it look like a giant cat. The work of art can be found directly on the lake promenade.
- On two of the three islets off the coast of Cannero Riviera there are remains of castles , the Castelli di Cannero or Castelli Malpaga, where the pirate brothers Mazzardi lived. The castles were destroyed by Filippo Maria Visconti in 1414 and then Ludovico Borromeo built his Rocca Vitaliana from 1519–1521, which is now under restoration.
