history

The ancient settlement of the area is evidenced by archaeological finds from the hamlet of Cireggio, where stone fragments from the late Bronze and Iron Ages were found in the locality of San Bernardo , and from Mount Zuoli, where a protohistoric altar and a possible ritual slide have been identified.

With the agreement of August 11, 1221, the nobles of Crusinallo handed Omegna to the diocese of Novara . The area was given to Francesco Barbavara by Filippo Maria Visconti on March 22, 1413 and inherited first to the Visconti Borromeo, then in 1714 to the Borromeo Arese, and the family stayed until the arrival of Napoleon Bonaparte's troops .

In 1798 the French general Léotaud landed with a large number of soldiers in Pallanza , occupied Cannobio and part of the Ossola valley, but was defeated by the Savoy of the Marquis d'Oncieux between Gravellona and Ornavasso . Subsequently, the canton of Omegna, which was subordinate to the fifth district with its seat in Arona , belonged to the Agogna department in the Cisalpine Republic (1800). After the victory over Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna sanctioned the restoration of Savoy in 1815; the people of Omegna welcomed with joy the return of Vittorio Emanuele I.

During the Second World War , the resistance started against the Nazi - Fascists in the area; it continued over the long months with a series of deaths (60 dead, including civilians) and successes. Omegna was a basis for the liberation of the Ossola Valley by the partisans in September 1944. The liberation of Omegna took place on April 24, 1945, while the Anglo-American troops were crossing the Po , and in the cities of northern Italy still occupied by the National Socialist troops that of the Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale Alta Italia (CLNAI) ordered general uprising was triggered. This date will be remembered today in the name of the Rathausplatz.

Attractions

  • The church of Sant'Ambrogio is a late Romanesque building with three naves, side chapels and ossuary (converted into the chapel of the Madonna of Lourdes). Part of the medieval building houses the south flank, the lantern, the bell tower and the facade. The very high bell tower with a square floor plan and smooth masonry is opened by loopholes on the lower floors and it has an internal staircase to the floors in the thickness of the masonry and is decorated with hanging arches. The interior of the collegiate church is baroque, with an altarpiece painted by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio in 1547 and the urn containing the body of the martyr Saint Vitus, the patron saint of Omegna. The organ, which is located on a choir in cornu evangelii, has 35 nominal registers and is the work of the Scolari company from Bolzano Novarese .
  • The Old Bridge, built in the 15th century, consists of two arches (one of which has a circular rope and is not very pronounced) and has a central pile that rests on a boulder in the middle of the Strona. Like most medieval bridges, it is characterized by its mountain and valley structure.
  • The Porta Romana or Porta della Valle, built around 1100 AD, is the remainder of the five gates that led to Omegna in the Middle Ages: Maggiore, Salera, Segnara, Castello and Valle. From this gate a road led into the Strona valley, over the Ponte Antico (old bridge).
  • The Museum of Art and Industry Forum aims to promote research into the history of the industrialization of the city of Omegna and the Cusio. Shows the history of the household industry with objects supplied by the famous industries of the city (Piazza, Bialetti, Alessi, Lagostina, Girmi), which for years was the Italian capital of the production of pressure cookers, coffee makers, kettles and appliances.
