Alfonso Bialetti , the father of Renato Bialetti, invented an espresso maker with an octagonal base called La Moka in 1933 . After the end of the war in 1946, Renato Bialetti took over the family business founded in 1919 in Omegna on Lake Orta in Piedmont and became successful as an entrepreneur worldwide. In 1986 he sold the company.

Renato Bialetti himself was the "man with the mustache" in advertising for La Moka and became the advertising star of the post-war period. The Turin daily La Stampa called it an "Icon of Made in Italy".

Bialetti's ashes were buried in an espresso pot used as an urn in the family grave of the northern Italian municipality of Casale Corte Cerro in the Piedmont region.
