La Stampa ( Eng .: "Die Presse") is one of the best known and most widely distributed Italian daily newspapers . The liberal-conservative Turin newspaper was considered a specialty until 2016: For 96 years, the major shareholder of the newspaper “La Stampa” was Fiat, the only car manufacturer ever to be involved in the media business with 77 percent. After the merger with the Espresso group, which includes 15 regional and local newspapers, eight weekly and monthly magazines, including the investigative magazine "L'Espresso", three radio and seven television stations and the large Internet provider Kataweb, their main shareholder, Carlo De Benedetti , master of Italy's largest media company. This brought two of the two most important daily newspapers - “ La Repubblica ” and “La Stampa” - under the control of the same media company.
The newspaper was founded in 1867 by Ruggero Bonghi under the name Gazzetta Piemontese . In 1895 Alfredo Frassati bought the newspaper, gave it its current name and an Italian-wide perspective. After criticism of the murder of Giacomo Matteotti , which was supported by the Mussolini regime , he was forced to resign from the editorial board and sell it to Giovanni Agnelli senior .
During the reign of Mussolini, the newspaper was politically into line . In order to set itself apart, it first appeared under the title La Nuova Stampa after the fall of Mussolini .
In 2006, La Stampa was one of the newspapers that published the controversial Mohammed cartoons . In 2015 it was the fifth largest daily newspaper in Italy by circulation.
