biography

Asylum in Argentina

Coming from a family of the Jewish community in Modena (his father Enzo was a well-known lawyer in Modena, his mother Ida Donati was descended from Donato Donati, a trader who came to Modena from Finale Emilia in 1600 and made buckwheat in the Duchy of Este introduced), he emigrated with his family to Argentina in 1938 at the age of twelve in order to escape the fascist persecution. He completed his studies in Buenos Aires and began his journalistic career in 1943 as the director of Italia libera (free Italy).

Journalistic career

After the Second World War , he and his family returned to Modena from Argentina, just in time to take part in the referendum on June 2, 1946, with which the Italians were asked to choose between monarchy and republic . At the age of just 20, he continued the journalistic career he had begun in Argentina and headed the Gazzetta di Modena for almost two years until he decided to live in Israel .

The most important tasks

In 1960 he moved to Moscow , where he worked as a correspondent for Corriere della Sera until 1962 and then as a correspondent for Il Giorno until 1966. In 1966 he returned to RAI , where he headed the news program Telegiornale until 1968 (this was an innovation for Italian television , as until then the news was read by professional "speakers" and not by journalists). He returned to the newspaper industry in 1969 as a reporter for the Turin daily La Stampa , which he held until 1973 when he became director of the same newspaper and the afternoon newspaper Stampa sera. He stayed in Turin until 1978. From 1979 to 1983 he worked with The Times , responsible for international problems. In 1988 he became the main editorial writer of the Corriere della sera and from 1998 to July 3, 2007 he was advisor on foreign relations to the Italian President - Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and then Giorgio Napolitano .

watch TV

In addition to the news to which he subscribed in the mid-1960s, he also worked on many other television broadcasts, most of which were realized by the RAI. Then again for the RAI: I giorni dell'infanzia (1993), Emozioni TV (1995) and Gli archivi del Cremlino (1997), he was also the author of this program. In 1999 at RAI Uno he headed C'era una volta la Russia .
