Varzo is a municipality in Val Divedro , on the Italian side of the Simplon Pass , in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .

geography

The place is at an altitude of 568 m above sea level. The municipality covers an area of ​​97  km² . The districts of San Domenico, Bertonio, Castello, Cattagna, Coggia, Gebbo, Piaggio, Riceno, Riva, Rosso and Turiggia belong to the Varzo. The neighboring municipalities are Baceno , Crevoladossola , Crodo , Trasquera and Bognanco .

history

In Roman times , the consular road Severiana Augusta led from Varzo, which connected Mediolanum (today's Milan) with Verbannus Lacus (Verbano) or Lake Maggiore , and from here to the Simplon Pass (Latin Summo Plano).
