The Val Divedro is a cross-border valley on the southern side of the Alps .

geography

It extends from the summit of the Simplon Pass over the Italian border to Varzo . Crevola d'Ossola is at the end of the valley . The river that gives the valley its name is called Doveria . Up to Gstein-Gabi , Doveria is still called Chrummenbach , the unofficial language border is located at the said place. The valley is characterized by rugged mountains up to 1900 m high , especially in the Gondo Gorge and Iselle. The valley between Gstein-Gabi and Iselle is so narrow that only the Simplon Pass road and Doveria can be accommodated in it. The pass road leads right through the village. The hamlets of Eggen and Simplon, on the other hand, are exempt from through traffic. The road from Ornavasso to Iselle di Trasquera Statale 33 del Sempione has the Euroclassification (E62). Since around 1990 a tunnel has been running through the Montecrevola, the road ending in front of Varzo.

Since 2007 the village of Varzo has been bypassed in a long viaduct.

Climate and nature

The climate is different, depending on the different altitude. While on the Simplon Pass as far as Simplon Dorf there is an alpine climate with eternal snow and alpine meadows, the warm Insubric climate predominates on the Italian side . On the Italian side, chestnuts , palm trees and occasional vines thrive . The river with its flat stones is reminiscent of the Maggia Valley in Ticino .
