Gravellona Toce is a municipality in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .

geography

The place is 11 km from the provincial capital Verbania at an altitude of 211 m above sea level. M. The municipality covers an area of ​​14.67  km² . Gravellona Toce is, like Omegna , a typical example of large-scale urban sprawl north of Milan . Gravellona Toce and Omegna have now grown together, although the respective town centers are seven kilometers apart. Industrial companies also extend eastwards towards Lake Maggiore . The neighboring municipalities are Baveno , Casale Corte Cerro , Mergozzo , Omegna, Ornavasso , Stresa and Verbania . The patron saint of the place is San Pietro .

history

The finds of worked flint are evidence of prehistoric settlements in the Gravellona Toce area. The indigenous Ligurian and Lepontier tribes merged in the 5th century BC with the Celtic invaders who founded a settlement (Castelliere) in the village of Motto . The Celts were later conquered by the Romans (200 BC) who built a village and invaded the Roman administration of Italy on the right. From Gravellona Toce one passed the consular road Severiana Augusta which connected Mediolanum ( Milan ) with Verbanus ( Lake Maggiore ).

Attractions

  • Parish Church of San Pietro was built in the 12th century and then expanded. The current facade dates from 1862 and is in the neo-Renaissance style; the bell tower from 1856 is made of blocks of pink granite from Baveno .
  • Romanesque Church of San Maurizio (10th century): the oldest and most important monument to Gravellona Toce, whose existence has been documented since the 10th century. In the interior, the cross vaults of the roof of the single-nave nave from the 15th century were replaced by trusses; in the course of 1925 frescoes were created from the limestone layer that hid them.
