history
The first human traces in this area go back to prehistory (discovery of a bronze ax from 1500 BC). The devil's wall, an imposing megalithic structure, probably served sacred and social functions. It is a huge wall that is surrounded on three sides by a large terrace facing the different directions.
In 1200 the power of the aristocratic De Rodis family reached a peak. This favored the settlement of Walsers in the area.
In 1380 Crodo and the entire Ossola Valley were subjugated by the Visconti family , who, however, granted the area special autonomy. The Visconti had signal towers built against incursions by the Valais, some of which are still standing today. The signals transmitted from tower to tower from the upper Val Formazza reached Milan in a very short time .
