Gignese is a municipality in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .
geography
The place is at an altitude of 707 m above sea level. M. The municipality covers an area of 14 km² . The municipality consists of the districts Alpino, Nocco and Vezzo. Gignese is located between Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore , near Monte Mottarone. On the Mottarone at an altitude of 1491 m slm you have a good view.
The neighboring municipalities are Armeno , Brovello-Carpugnino , Omegna and Stresa .
history
The village of Gignese (originally Zinexium) was first mentioned in 1269 in a document in which Braga de Zinexio paid a fee to the monastery of Arona . The municipality, subject to the Archdiocese of Milan , passed to the Visconti family of Milan in the 14th century , who passed Gignese on to the Borromeo family in 1441 until the fiefs were abolished in 1797.

Sports
The 9-hole Alpine Golf Club of Stresa is located on a green natural terrace between Gignese and Vezzo . Started in 1924, the first Italian Open took place in September 1925 with 3 participants, won by Francesco Pasquali, followed by 1926 and 1927 by two more editions with 16 and then 30 participants. - Parish Church of San Maurizio was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century. It preserves a deposition by the painter Fermo Stella da Caravaggio from 1562.
- Museo dell'Ombrello e del Parasole (Umbrella and Parasol Museum) was founded by Igino Ambrosini in Gignese in 1939. In 1976 a new museum was built. On two floors, on the ground floor, there is a collection of around three hundred finds (cataloged out of more than 1,500), the result of a craftsmanship practiced by seasonal emigrants since the early 19th century. On the second floor there is a room dedicated to the exhibition of photographic material and reminiscent of the working methods of this particular type of traveling craftsman , the Lusciat . In common with many other housekeepers, the technical jargon was the lusciàt , called tarùsc . The Umbrella and Parasol Museum is visited by 8-10,000 visitors annually.
- The village of Alpino is a residential complex on the slopes of the Mottarone , at an average altitude of approx. 800 m above sea level. M. This place extends over the territory of the municipalities of Gignese and Stresa and is characterized by a wonderful view of the Borromean Gulf. The most important painters of the Milan area stayed in the Alpino: ( Ernesto Bazzaro , Leonardo Bazzaro , Eugenio Gignous , Filippo Carcano, U. Dell'Orto, G. Boggiani, Pompeo Mariani), among the musicians: Ildebrando Pizzetti , Arturo Toscanini , Guido Cantelli, Giovanni Anfossi with his student Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli . The then technical commissioner of the Italian national soccer team, Vittorio Pozzo , had part of the preparation for the 1934 World Cup at this location with the aim of detoxifying his players from the efforts of the championship.
- The Alpinia Botanical Garden is located at the most panoramic point of Mottino .
