Eugenio Gignous
Eugenio Gignous (born August 4, 1850 in Milan , † August 30, 1906 in Stresa ) was an Italian painter and a representative of Italian Impressionism .
Life
Gignous studied from 1864 to 1870 with Oscar Ricciardi and Gaetano Fasanotti at the Milan Accademia di Brera . Under the influence of Tranquillo Cremona and Filippo Carcano there , he turned to plein-air painting ( open -air painting ). After 1870, he initially exhibited frequently at the major Italian art exhibitions in Turin, Genoa and Venice. Later he came to some fame and international renown (exhibitions and prizes in Paris, Munich, London, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro). In 1887 he settled in Stresa on Lake Maggiore. Many of his landscapes were created during these years.

Initially, his work was still committed to a realistic style with fixed contours. This was then more and more replaced by a freer style of painting that paid attention to the influences of light. Here there are relationships to the French Impressionists and to the Italian contemporaries in Florence and Naples, the Macchiaioli (from Italian Macchia for spots). However, his works always remain closer to nature, the dissolution of the contours is never a determining element. In terms of art history, it stands between impressionism and " verismo ", the Italian variety of realism . Realism always remained decisive for him.
His works can be seen in some museums in Italy. Many pictures are also in private ownership, which is why they often find their way into the international art trade.
