Ghiffa is a municipality on Lake Maggiore in the Italian province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (VB) in the Piedmont region .

geography

The place is at an altitude of 201 m above sea level. The municipality covers an area of ​​13.95  km² . Ghiffa includes the Arca, Bozzela, Carpiano, Cargiago, Caronio, Ceredo, Deccio, Frino, Rometto, Ronco, San Maurizio, Selva, Sasso and Susello fractions. The neighboring municipalities are Arizzano , Bee , Castelveccana ( VA ), Laveno-Mombello , Oggebbio , Porto Valtravaglia ( VA ), Premeno and Verbania .

history

The first settlements go back to the Golasecca culture and the Iron Age , as evidenced by the rock carvings and finds in the area of ​​the Sacro Monte of Ghiffa. There are various finds from Roman times , including some tombs in Frino and Carpiano.

The first mention of Ghiffa comes from the Middle Ages in a liturgical document from 1125 AD, along with Intra, Pallanza and Valle Intrasca. Filippo Maria Visconti in 1447 handed over the deanery of San Maurizio as a feud to the Marquis Moriggia (Morigi), they held a court in Ceredo and built their own castle in the village of Frino, which became the capital of the feud. This feud lasted until 1744, when the feud was ceded to the Kingdom of Savoy after the Treaty of Worms , and then, with the extinction of the Moriggia family, it passed to the Borromeo family.

In the 19th century, maritime traffic developed, the completion of the coastal road to Switzerland.

Ghiffa has been known since the 19th century for the felt hats made here , which are called Borsalino hats . The former building of the Panizza hat factory is now home to a hat maker museum.

Attractions

  • Sacro Monte di Ghiffa stands in the area of ​​the village; This pilgrimage site since 2003 as part of the Sacred Mounts in the list of World Heritage of UNESCO entered.
  • The parish church of San Maurizio stands on a green, isolated hill and dates from the 12th century. The first building dates from 1125, but was completely rebuilt in 1547 and the temple received its current typological features.
  • The church of Santa Croce is not far from the town hall; it was built in the second half of the 17th century as a simple oratory and only became a parish church in 1954. The bell tower next to it dates from 1773.
  • The Beata Vergine Assunta church in the Susello district was first mentioned in 1173 and has a Lombard hut profile with neo-Gothic battlements on the top and two characteristic rooms, introduced by arches on the sides of the portal from the 16th century.
  • The Benedictine monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament dates from the early 20th century and was built on the ruins of an old patrician house, the Prestini house. The sisters came in 1906 from Seregno , where the monastery was founded in 1880 by the French monastery of Arras .
  • The Frino Castle was built around 1600 by the Marquis Moriggia. Located in one of the most beautiful and panoramic locations of Lake Maggiore , it was sold to the family extinction in 1896 and bought by the architect Giuseppe Pirovano. He took over the castle, which also lacked the rich furnishings, and restored it to its former glory.
