The Tourcoing Benedictine Monastery (also: Monastère du Coeur-Très-Pur-de-Marie ) was a priory of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament from 1814 to 2011, first in Savy-Berlette , from 1815 in Arras , from 1905 to 1921 in Dumfries in Scotland and from 1921 in Tourcoing ( Département Nord ) in France.

history

From Rouen to Arras

The Benedictine monastery of Rouen , founded by Mechtilde de Bar, founded a daughter monastery northwest of Arras in Savy-Berlette in 1814, which moved to Arras in 1815, first to rue Saint-Maurice and from 1818 to rue Damiens , where it built a neo-late-Gothic chapel in 1842.

From Arras to Germany, Scotland and Italy

In 1841 Arras founded Saint-Omer , which in turn was founded in Germany ( Osnabrück 1855 and Bonn- Endenich 1858) and which was relocated to Longuenesse in 1865 and later to Boulogne-sur-Mer . In 1881 Arras founded a daughter monastery in Dumfries (Maxwell Street 28-30) in Scotland, which in 1906 was able to accommodate the mother convent expelled by the Third Republic . Some nuns also went from Arras to Seregno in Italy in 1880 (from 1906 Ghiffa ) and in 1906 from Arras to the daughter monastery founded in Milan in 1892 .

90 years in Tourcoing

When the convent was able to return to France in 1921, it went to Tourcoing ( Rue Faidherbe 18 ), where in 1922, in fulfillment of a vow made in 1916, the city established a place of perpetual adoration ( La Chapelle du Voeu , Vow Chapel ) by the sisters who had settled there was looked after. From 1926 to 1956 some of the nuns returned to Arras for perpetual worship. In 2011 the Tourcoing Monastery had to be closed. There were only two sisters left. The worship chapel, praised as very aesthetic, has belonged to the local parish ever since.
