Otto Wilhelm von Essen ( Russian Отто Васильевич фон Эссен ; born March 28 . Jul / 8. April  1761 greg. In Udenküll , † May 16 jul. / 28. May  1834 greg. In Reval ) was a Russian Civil Governor of Estonia .

Life

Origin and family

Otto was a member of the Estonian von Essen family, which was nobilized to the Swedish nobility in 1643 . His parents were the Russian Lieutenant General Reinhold Wilhelm von Essen (1722–1788) and Eleonora, née von Saß (1734–1765).

He married Gertrude Margarethe Staël von Holstein (1764-1828) in Reval in 1791 . The marriage had four children:

Career

Essen served in the Russian midshipman corps from 1771 and advanced to Mitschman in 1777 and lieutenant in 1780 . From 1780 to 1781 he sailed on one of the ships of armed neutrality in the Atlantic . In 1788 he took part in the naval battle at Hogland as a lieutenant captain . In 1789 he was awarded the Order of St. George IV. Class and in 1792 received his farewell as Lieutenant Lieutenant II .

He initially retired to his Estonian estates, Old and New Parmel , Patz, Soinitz , Kütke , Kohhat and, at times, Malla, before becoming a member of the Knighthood Committee and curator of the Knight and Cathedral School in Reval in 1793 . In the years 1797 and 1801 he was coronation deputy of the Estonian knighthood and from 1803 to 1809 a member of the senior administration of the Estonian aristocratic goods credit fund. From 1809 to 1832 he was district administrator and in 1830 he became a real councilor of state . In 1832 and 1833 he was finally civil governor and in 1833 he was still president of the Estonian Provincial Legislative Commission before he retired due to illness in the same year.

Essen was also the holder of the Order of St. Wladimir III. Class and the Order of St. Anne, 1st Class.
