Reinhold Wilhelm von Essen ( Russian Рейнгольд Вильгельм фон Эссен; Рейнгольд-Вильгельм Иванович Эссен ; born August 23 . Jul / 3. September  1722 greg. In Pöddes ; † December 26, 1787 jul. / 6. January  1788 greg. In Tallinn ) was a Russian lieutenant general .

Life

Origin and family

Reinhold Wilhelm was a member of the 1643 in the Swedish nobility ennobled Estonian family of food .

His parents were the Estonian district administrator Klaus Gustav von Essen († 1744) and Lunetta, born von Rohr from the house of Suida in Ingermanland , widowed von Rehbinder († 1752).

His first marriage in 1754 was the heiress of the Estonian estate Kiwidepäh , Anna Eleonora, née von Saß (1734–1765). Widowed, he joined Charlotta Eleonora von Stiernhielm (1748-1818) one more time in the state of marriage in 1770. Both marriages resulted in a total of nine children, including the civil governor of Estonia , Otto Wilhelm von Essen (1761-1834).

Career

Essen began his career in the Imperial Russian Army in 1738 as a rider in the Regiment Guard on Horseback in St. Petersburg . With this regiment he took part in the campaign in Finland and in 1751 advanced to lieutenant . For health reasons he was transferred to the Reval garrison in 1753 and later switched to the body cuirassier regiment. In 1757 he was promoted to colonel and took part in the battles near Zorndorf , Palzig and Kunersdorf in the Seven Years' War , where he was last seriously wounded. Under Peter III. he rose to major general and chief of the Narva Cuirassier Regiment. He served in the Estonian Division from 1763, where he became commander in 1771 when he was promoted to Lieutenant General . From 1771 to 1772 he led a corps in Wallachia as commander and took part in the siege of Zurz . He became commander of a reserve corps on the Seret in 1772 and was, after all, supreme commander in Reval from 1776.

Essen was owned by the Estonian estates Kiwidepäh and Hallik , as well as tenants from Randefer on Ösel .

Essen was also a knight of the Order of St. George IV. Class and of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky .
