The Alexander Nevsky Order is a Russian order that was first awarded in Imperial Russia and later again in the Soviet Union . In 2010 it was donated again in the Russian Federation .

The Imperial Order

The first Imperial Order of the saints and true believers Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky ( Russian Iмператорский Орденъ Святого Благовѣрного Великого Князя Александра Невского / Imperatorskij Order Swjatowo Blagowernowo Welikowo Knjasja Alexandra Newskowo ) was an Imperial Russian civil and military Order of Merit, in the rank of Second after Andreas religious , and only had one class . It was only awarded to persons who had at least the rank of major general . Princes of imperial blood received the medal automatically when they came of age , Russian grand dukes and sons of the tsar immediately after their baptism . It was donated on May 21, 1725 by Catherine I , after the death of her husband Tsar Peter the Great .

The sign of the order is a golden , red enameled, eight-pointed cross with the image of St. Alexander Nevsky in golden armor on horseback and on the back with the crowned cipher of the saint. In the four corners are four golden crowned two-headed eagles. The medal could be bestowed with diamonds for outstanding merits and with gold swords for military merits. When decorating with diamonds, the eagles, the frame of the medallion in the middle and the swords (if any) are decorated with these precious stones, with the order star the whole star is covered with diamonds. When decorating with swords, these are placed under the eagles on the cross and placed in a crossed shape under the medallion of the star. Non-Christians received the order with the tsar's eagle instead of the saint figure in the middle medallion of the cross and the star.

The order was carried on a ponceau-red , 10 cm wide ribbon to hang over the left shoulder to the right hip, together with an eight-pointed silver medal star with the crowned cipher of St. Alexander: S. A. ( Sanctus Alexander , this in Latin letters) surrounded by the motto of the order "For work and the fatherland" ( Russian " За Труды и Отечество ", " Za trudy i otjetschestwo ") in gold inscription on a red tire. The holders of the Order of St. Andrew wore the Newskirden as a neck decoration. The religious feast was August 30th (September 11th).

During the short-lived provisional government under Alexander Kerensky , the order was awarded, but with uncrowned double-headed eagles in the corners of the cross. After the October Revolution of 1917 it was no longer awarded. The Romanow - Dynasty in exile kept the Order as a House Order .

The Soviet order

Soviet Nevsky Order

The second Alexander Nevsky Order ( Орден Александра Невского , Order Aleksandra Nevskowo ) was an Order of Military Merit and was founded on July 29, 1942 by the government of Joseph Stalin . In the order of Soviet awards he stood between the Bogdan Khmelnitsky Order III. Class and the Order of the Great Patriotic War I. Class.

Like all higher Soviet orders , the Nevsky Order had only one class. The sign of the order was a five-armed red enameled star with silver rays between the arms, under the star two crossed battle axes are placed. The middle medallion shows a half-length portrait of Alexander Newski in silver and below him a silver plaque with the state emblem of hammer and sickle . A bow and a quiver with arrows crossed with a sword are placed under the central medallion . The medal is worn on the right breast.

The medal was awarded around 40,000 times during the Second World War .

By resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation No. 2557-I of March 20, 1992, the order was retained as a state decoration of the Russian Federation , but it was initially not awarded in post-Soviet Russia .
