Basic element
The Basic Element Ltd. (often shortened to Basel ; Russian Ба́зовый элеме́нт ) is a global Russian conglomerate. It is 100% owned by the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska and is his investment company and asset holding company for his holdings . The company is based in the British tax haven Jersey , and the company's headquarters are in Moscow . Basic Element was founded in 1997.
Business areas and key figures
The companies that make up Basic Elements operate in six main business areas: energy, manufacturing, raw materials, financial services, construction and aerospace. In addition to Russian companies, these include many in other countries.
Consolidated sales of the investments in 2006 totaled around 18 billion US dollars. Around 600,000 people were employed in these companies.
Energy sector
The energy sector is combined in the En + Group. It includes the production and sale of aluminum , bauxite , petroleum and the power generation sector. The most important holdings are the UC RUSAL aluminum works.
- UC RUSAL
The UC RUSAL is the world's largest manufacturer of aluminum (4.2 million tonnes in 2007). Over a hundred thousand people are employed. Basic Element holds a 56.76 percent stake in UC RUSAL.
- Central European Aluminum Company (CEAC)
CEAC operates the aluminum smelter Kombinat Aluminum Podgorica near Podgorica in Montenegro and the bauxite mine Bauxite mine Niksic near Nikšić in Montenegro. Both companies generate around 15 percent of the gross national product of Montenegro and employ over 4,000 people.

EuroSibEnergo is the most important Russian energy producer. The company was founded in July 2001 and holds shares in the following companies:

- Strikeforce Mining and Resources Ltd. (SMR)
The SMR is active in the exploration, production, enrichment etc. of metals, especially molybdenum . Approx. 5.5 percent of the European molybdenum market is produced.
Manufacturing sector
The manufacturing sector produces automobiles, automobile components, airplanes, weapons vehicles and railroad cars. In 2007, 226,192 small vans (LCV) and trucks, 22,344 buses, 40,034 passenger cars, 111,399 engines and 5,116 railway wagons were built. The area has over a hundred thousand employees. Sales increased from $ 3,527 (2005) to 4,541 (2006) to 6,175 (2007) million dollars.
The GAZ Group was formed in 2005 from the restructuring of JSC RusPromAvto. It is the largest Russian vehicle manufacturer and has 18 factories in 10 regions and LDV Holding in the UK.

RM Systems produces automotive components in Nizhny Novgorod in the Volga Federal District .
- Aviacor
Aviacor builds, repairs and maintains Tupolev Tu-154M and Antonov An-140 aircraft . Aviacor especially wants to build the regional turboprop aircraft Antonov An-140.
- VPK - Military Manufacturing Company
The VPK Military Manufacturing Company specializes in tanks and military vehicles. The area includes the Arzamass engineering works in Arsamas , Hull Plant in Vyksa (both in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ) and Barnaultransmash in Barnaul in the Altai region . Mainly armored personnel carriers of the models BTR-80 , BTR-90 and BRMD-2M are produced and serviced.

JSC Russian Corporation of Transport Manufacturing is a manufacturer of railway wagons (e.g. gondolas , covered wagons , tank wagons and flat wagons for ISO containers , etc.). The new company is based in Saransk , Republic of Mordovia .
Financial services
Financial services include insurance, banking, leasing and pension funds. It has over 8,000 employees and over 770 sales outlets. Sales increased from $ 1,476 million in 2006 to $ 1,920 million in 2007.
- IJSC Ingosstrakh
Ingosstrakh is one of the largest Russian insurance groups. The insurance group founded in 1947 has over 83 regional offices and is represented in 221 cities. It is also represented in five CIS countries .
- JSCB Soyuz Bank
Soyus Bank was founded in 1993. It is among the 30 largest banks in Russia. It has over 55 branches in 20 Russian regions. It has assets in 2007 of 91,980 million rubles and a net profit in 2007 of 1,029 million rubles.
- Element leasing

Construction sector
The construction sector develops transportation infrastructure, commercial and residential real estate. The most important companies are Glavstroy, Transstroy and Altius Development. Revenue increased 49 percent from $ 1,045 million in 2006 to $ 1,559 million in 2007. The construction sector has over 30,000 employees.
- Glavstroy Corporation
Glavstroy Corporation primarily develops buildings in Moscow and St. Petersburg. This also includes the Glavmosstroy housing company with numerous residential complexes in Moscow. It employs over 20,000 people.
- Transstroy
Transstroy is one of the largest holding companies that primarily builds transport infrastructure (e.g. roads, highways, bridges and tunnels). Aviation sector

Basel Aero was founded in 2007 as an airport operating company. The following airports are operated in Russia:
Sochi Airport has 2 runways, 11 boarding gates and a passenger capacity of max. 800 passengers per hour. It has 1000 parking spaces. In 2007 a new terminal with over 60,000 square meters was opened. In 2007 1.59 million passengers were handled. As part of the 2014 Winter Olympics , Sochi Airport is to be expanded to a capacity of 4 million passengers.
Krasnodar Airport has three terminals (International, National Flights + Freight). 38 aircraft can be handled at the same time. In 2007 1.39 million passengers were handled. It is the home airport of Kuban Airlines.
Anapa Airport has a capacity of 400 passengers per hour. In 2007, 0.69 million passengers were handled.
- Gelendzhik Airport
Gelendzhik Airport is located on the Black Sea coast in Gelendzhik in the Krasnodar region . It has a runway of 3,100 × 60 meters and an area of 28,000 square meters.
Kuban Airlines has 21 aircraft, including 12 of the Yakovlev Jak-42 type, and is based at Krasnodar Airport . Kuban Airlines was founded in 1993 and reorganized in 2006. Numerous cities in Russia and some international destinations are served. In 2012 the operation was stopped.

- 66% of the world's largest aluminum producer US RUSAL
- 25% in the Austrian construction group STRABAG SE . Deripaska bought this stake through its construction company SIBAL in April 2007 for more than one billion euros.
- 20% of the Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International , with which 43% of the voting rights are connected. The purchase price for this business alone was 1.14 billion euros.
Basic Element acquired shares worth the equivalent of more than 1.5 billion euros for both holdings together.

Effects of the financial crisis
As a result of the financial crisis, the Glavstroy construction group had to give up four large construction projects in Saint Petersburg at the beginning of March 2009 and sell them to the oligarch Suleiman Abusaidowitsch Kerimov's investment company Nafta Moscow .
The automobile holding GAZ Group (Группа ГАЗ) also ran into considerable financial difficulties in mid-February 2009. This includes Gorkowski Avtomobilny Sawod (GAZ) himself.
