United Company RUSAL PLC ( Russian РУСАЛ , abbreviation for Русский алюминий , German: Russian aluminum ) is a Russian aluminum manufacturer. Since the merger with the Siberian-Urals Aluminum Company (SUAL) in 2007, RUSAL has been the world's largest manufacturer of aluminum and is now in second place behind the China Hongqiao Group . RUSAL covers 75% of Russia's domestic demand for aluminum. In 2015, 3.645 million t of primary aluminum were produced.
RUSAL was 48.13% owned by Oleg Deripaskas Holding En + in February 2018 . Other large shareholders are SUAL Partners (20.5%), Onexim from Mikhail Prokhorov (6%) and Glencore (Amokenga; 8.75%).
history
RUSAL was created in 2000 through the merger of the aluminum divisions of Sibirsky Aluminum and Sibneft . The company then continued to grow through global acquisitions.
In March 2007, RUSAL took over the former SUAL and the aluminum division of Glencore. Since then, the previous RUSAL owners have held 66%, the former SUAL owners 22% and Glencore 12% of the shares in the significantly expanded company. By consolidating the aluminum divisions of several companies, RUSAL achieved the position of the world's largest aluminum producer.
In the course of further changes in the group's ownership structure in April 2008, the Russian entrepreneur Oleg Deripaska took over 56.7 percent of the shares in RUSAL through his Basic Element holding . Further shares were acquired by Viktor Wekselberg with 18.9%, Mikhail Prokhorov with 14.0% and the company Glencore, registered in Switzerland, with 10.3%.
By 2014, RUSAL had built the Boguchany hydropower plant (3,000 MW) and is planning an attached aluminum plant (BEMO) with a capacity of 600,000 tpa. Another aluminum plant with a capacity of 750,000 tpa is being built in Taischet .
In 2016, the Alpart aluminum oxide refinery from Jamaica with its own bauxite deposits was sold to the Chinese JISCO . In March 2016, RUSAL was 48.13% owned by Oleg Deripaskas Holding En + , SUAL Partners held 15.8%, Onexim 17.02% and Glencore (Amokenga) 8.75%.

RUSAL mines bauxite in Severouralsk , Timan (near Uchta ), Guyana and near Kindia and in Dian-Dian ( Guinea ). In Guyana, the ore is transported down the Berbice River by 20 barges.
The bauxite is transported by rail from Kindia in Guinea to Conakry and shipped in the port. 3.2 million tons are exported here every year. Since Guinea's independence from France in 1958, the socialist government under Sekou Touré had turned to the Soviet Union, which was later shown in good relations and cooperation with Rusal from 2000. In 2018, the company opened a second mine in Dian-Dian northeast of Boké , which has a mining potential of 564 million tons; so that the mines of Guinea already account for 27% of the bauxite of Rusal.
In Achinsk , nepheline ore from the Kija-Schaltyr deposit ( ) is processed into aluminum oxide .
The graphite electrodes are produced in Shanxi (China).
RUSAL owns aluminum rolling mills in Sayanogorsk, Mikhailovsk and Yerevan .
In Nadwoizy and Volgograd (Russia) and there are smaller plants that produce little or no primary aluminum.
The company is also the only producer of silicon in Russia (the Shelechov plant ).
US sanctions
On April 6, 2018, the company was from the United States with sanctions occupied. The company's assets were frozen and US citizens were prohibited from doing business with the company. Non-US citizens also face sanctions if they continue business contacts with the company. The reason given by the US Treasury Secretary was the annexation of the Crimean peninsula , the support of the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad , the influence on Western democracies and the promotion of cybercrime by the Russian government.
On April 25, 2018, it was announced that the sanctions would be lifted if Deripaska “gave up control of the company”. On May 25, he resigned from his position.
