Schelechow ( Russian Шелехов ) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 47,943 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the southern edge of the plain north of the Eastern Sayan , about 20 km southwest of the Oblast capital Irkutsk , on the Irkut River , a left tributary of the Angara .

The town of Schelechow is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

Schelechow is on the Trans-Siberian Railway ( Gontscharowo station , 5204 km from Moscow ) and the M55 Irkutsk – Chita road .

history

Schelechow was built as a satellite town of Irkutsk in the early 1950s in connection with the construction of the Irkutsk aluminum plant . In 1956, the rapidly growing town became an urban-type settlement and was named after the navigator and entrepreneur Grigori Schelichow , albeit in a different, less common spelling of the family name. In 1962 city rights were granted.

Since 2005 there has been a city ​​partnership with Nomi in Japan .
