Mama ( Russian Ма́ма ) is an urban-type settlement in the Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 3630 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is a good 850 km as the crow flies northeast of the Irkutsk Oblast Administrative Center on the northern edge of the Stanovoi Highlands (in this part called North Baikal Highlands (Severo-Baikalskoje nagorje) ) and west of the Patom Highlands . It is located on the left bank of the Lena tributary Witim , immediately below the confluence of the left tributary Mama .

Mama is the administrative center of the Rajons Mamsko-Tschuiski and seat of the municipality Mamskoje gorodskoje posselenije, which also includes the settlements Zarya (directly opposite on the other bank of mum) Teterinsk (4 km south-east on the right bank of the Vitim) and Woronzowka (60 km north, on the right bank of the Witim) belong.

history

The site was founded in 1928 as a base for exploring mica ( muscovite ) deposits in the area, which had been known but not exploited since the 17th century. Mama received urban-type settlement status as early as 1932. In 1951 the place became the administrative seat of the newly created Mamsko-Tschuiski rajon (named after the rivers Mama and Tschuja , which flow through it).

Mama lies is the end point of the regional road 25N-004, which is currently only passable in winter and is partly under construction, which begins at the city of Bodaibo 136 km away , which in turn can be reached via the 220 km long 25K-023 from Taksimo in Buryatia , where is the nearest train station is on the Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM). South of Mama, at the Lugowski settlement on the river, a road branches off from 25N-004 to the mining settlements of Gorno-Tschuiski and Sogdiondon on the upper reaches of the Great Tschuja.

Mama has an airport ( ICAO code UIKM ), from which there are connections to Irkutsk several times a week.
