The Tschuja ( Russian Чуя , above the confluence of the Malaja Tschuja also Большая Чуя ( Bolschaja Tschuja, "Great Tschuja")) is a right tributary of the Lena in Buryatia and in the Irkutsk Oblast .
The Tschuja rises in the Synnyr mountain range ( хребта Сынныр ) northeast of Lake Baikal . It flows in a northerly direction through the northern Baikal highlands ( Северо-Байкальское нагорье ) and flows into the Lena after 512 km on the right. It drains an area of 18,400 km². The mean discharge (MQ) at the mouth is 162 m³ / s. The river is ice-free between May and October. The most important tributary of the Tschuja, the Malaja Tschuja ("Little Tschuja"), flows from the left at river kilometer 52.
