Lena massacre

Victims of the massacre

April 4th jul. / April 17, 1912 greg. it came to the mining company Lena Goldfields Ltd. a major strike with a focus in Bodaibo, in the course of which there were deaths in clashes between a total of 6000 striking workers in the region and armed government forces. These events went down in history as the Lena massacre .

There were various reasons for the displeasure in the workforce: their living in caves and under tarpaulins, the working hours of 15 to 16 hours, the poor pay, plus all kinds of harassment from superiors and authorities. The immediate cause was the sale of rotten meat in the mining company's shop. The miners formed a strike committee aimed at making improvements. The government sent troops to the region. When the strike committee was arrested, the other workers stopped working, demanded their immediate release, and then took to the streets. The regiment fired into the crowd of around 2,500 strikers on site. According to (later anti-Tsarist) Soviet propaganda, 270 dead and 250 wounded were the result of the massacre. Another representation, citing a mine report, names around 150 dead and 100 wounded. The terrible news led to further demonstrations throughout the Tsarist empire and prompted a mass protest on May 1, 1912 with around 400,000 workers.

During the Stalin era, there were mass executions of mine forced laborers throughout 1938. In Bodaibo, 948 camp inmates lost their lives as alleged "enemies of the state".

In memory of the local narrow-gauge railway over 100 kilometers long - one of the longest and oldest in Siberia, which was in operation from 1895 to 1967 and led to the Nadeschdinski priisk gold mine - a class GR steam locomotive delivered in 1951 from the GDR (by LKM ) was used as a Monument erected.

economy

Bodaibo is the center of the Lena Witim gold mining area, which is exploited by Lensoloto (subsidiary of Polyus Gold ). This area also includes the Sukhoi Log deposit with huge, previously unexploited gold reserves.

The river Mamakan flows about ten kilometers downstream from the opposite, southern side , not far from the mouth of which a hydropower plant at the Mamakan Dam with a capacity of 100 MW has been in operation since 1963 .
