Nowonukutski ( Russian: Новонуку́тский ) is a settlement (possjolok) in Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 3434 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 200 km as the crow flies northwest of the Irkutsk Oblast Administrative Center in the northeastern foreland of the Eastern Sayan . It is located on the left bank of the Salari , which flows about 7 km northeast into the Unga Bay (named after the Unga, which flows a little further north ) of the Bratsker reservoir of the Angara .
Nowonukutski is the administrative center of the Rajons Nukutski and seat and only town of the municipal structure (Munizipalnoje obrasowanije) Nowonukutskoje with the status of a rural community (selskoje posselenije).
history
The settlement was founded in 1958 in connection with the beginning development of a gypsum deposit . It belonged to the Nukutski rajon of the national circle of the Ust-Ordynsker Buryats (from 1977 autonomous district), founded on January 29, 1938 , whose administrative seat was at that time in the village of Nukuty 7 km northeast . The place name refers to the name Nukuty , with the Russian novo- for "new-". In December 1962, however, the Rajon was dissolved and its territory was connected to the neighboring Alarski rajon to the south, based in Kutulik , 40 km to the south . On April 3, 1972, the Nukutski rajon was spun off again, now based in Nowonukutski, especially since parts of the former Rajon center Nukuty had been flooded with the filling of the Bratsker reservoir.
