Vichorewka ( Russian Вихоревка ) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 22,520 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the central part of the Angara ridge , 35 km southwest of Bratsk and about 900 km northwest of the Oblast capital Irkutsk , on the river Vikhoreva , a left tributary of the Angara .
The city of Vikhorevka is part of the Bratsk district .
Wichorewka is an important train station on the Baikal-Amur main line (route kilometers 269 from Taischet ).
history
The place was created in 1957 in connection with the construction of the western section Taischet - Ust-Kut ( Lena ) of the later Baikal-Amur-Magistrale (BAM) as a workers' settlement at the station of the same name. It was named after the river Wichorewa, which got its name in memory of the Strelizen -Sotnik (Hundred Leader) Wichor Sawin, who died in the area in 1630 in a conflict with Evenki .
In 1966 the place received city rights.
