Swirsk ( Russian Свирск ) is a city in the Irkutsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 13,650 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the plain north of the East Sayan , about 150 km northwest of the oblast capital Irkutsk on the left bank of the Angara .
The city of Swirsk forms an independent urban district .
Swirsk is connected by a branch line (freight only) to the city and station Cheremkhovo on the Trans-Siberian Railway , 20 km away .

The climate is highly continental . The mean July temperature is +24 ° C (absolute maximum +35.4 ° C), the mean January temperature −19.4 ° C (absolute minimum −43.8 ° C), the mean annual rainfall 377 mm.
history
Since the first half of the 18th century there has been a settlement of Svirskaya in the place of the present city .
In the 1930s, an accumulator plant and a river port on the Angara for wood and coal handling for the nearby mining area around Cheremkhovo were built here and the place received the status of an urban-type settlement .
During the Second World War , another battery plant was relocated from Leningrad to Swirsk. The place continued to grow and on November 16, 1949 it was given city rights under its current name.

In Svirsk there are factories for special motor vehicle equipment ( Avtospezoborudowanije ) and accumulators ( Vostsibelement ).
