Katschug ( Russian Качу́г ) is an urban-type settlement in Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 7011 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is a good 200 km as the crow flies northeast of the Irkutsk Oblast Administrative Center west of the Baikal Mountains on both sides of the Lena , at the confluence of the right tributary Anga .

Katschug is the administrative center of the Katschugski Rajon and is the only town in the municipality of Katschugskoje gorodskoje posselenije. At the same time, the place is the seat of the rural community Katschugskoje selskoje posselenije, to which the villages Bolschije Goly, Bossogol, Isset, Kistenjowa, Krasnoyar, Malyje Goly, Sukhanai Baibet, Sutai, Timirjasewa and Tscheptychoi, as well as the Cheptychoi, belong within a radius of about 15 km .

history

The place was founded in 1686. Towards the end of the 17th century, Russians and Buryats lived there alongside the Evenks (then called Tungus) who lived in the area . The village name is from the Evenk word Kotscho derived designating a river bend. Initially, the form Katschig was used in Russian .

For more than 250 years Katschug remained the most important starting point for the waterway on the Lena from the Baikal region to Yakutia . In 1924, the administrative headquarters of was Ujesds Verkholensk moved to Katschug. On June 28, 1926 it became the center of a rajon named after him. Katschug has had the status of an urban-type settlement since 1935.

With the completion of the westernmost section of the later Baikal-Amur-Magistrale (BAM) from Taischet to Ust-Kut down the Lena in 1958, the importance of Katschug for traffic over the Lena decreased.

traffic

Katschug is on the regional road 25N-013 (formerly R418), which comes from Irkutsk via Ust-Ordynski and reaches the Lena a little above the settlement, crosses it near the village and - with the exception of the last few kilometers - on the right bank of the river via Verkholensk to the north neighboring Rajonzentrum Schigalowo leads.

The Lena is navigable for smaller vehicles from Katschug, 3,970 km above the estuary (regular shipping today begins at the port of Ossetrowo in Ust-Kut, which is almost 500 km downstream). The small airport of the place ( ICAO code UIIX ) is not regularly served in passenger traffic since the 1990s, but is used for example the forest fire monitoring - and -bekämpfungseinheit Aerial Forest Protection Service .

Trivia

The crater " Kachug " on Mars , registered since 1988, is named after the place Katschug .
