Balagansk ( Russian Балага́нск ) is an urban-type settlement in Irkutsk Oblast in Russia with 4109 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is located about 200 km as the crow flies north-northwest of the Irkutsk Oblast Administrative Center on the left bank of the Angara , which is dammed up there to form the Bratsker reservoir .

Balagansk is the administrative center of the Rajons Balaganski and seat and only town of the municipality Balaganskoje gorodskoje posselenije.

history

The place goes back to an Ostrog built in 1654 . This was a good 35 km south (upstream) of the current location above the confluence of the left tributary Unga on the left bank of the Angara ( approximate location ). In 1775 the settlement that arose near Ostrag was granted city rights as the administrative seat of a Ujesd , which was, however, dissolved again in 1783. From 1856 Balagansk was the administrative seat of an okrug of the Irkutsk governorate , which from 1898 was again referred to as Ujesd. After the Trans-Siberian Railway had passed much further south at the beginning of the 20th century , the place lost its importance, in 1924 with the dissolution of the Ujesd its administrative function and on January 6, 1925 its town charter.

As early as 1926 Balagansk was again the administrative seat of a Rajon named after him; At times the form of the name Balaganskoje was also in use. When the Bratsk reservoir was flooded from 1961, the old town was completely flooded and replaced by a town built from 1957 in a higher and more convenient location (road towards Ust-Uda and Schigalowo ). 1961 is considered to be the founding year of the new Balagansk, which was accordingly initially referred to as Novobalagansk, "New Balagansk" and in the same year received the status of an urban-type settlement. The Rajon was dissolved on February 1, 1963 and attached to the Salarinski rajon ; Balagansk itself belonged to the Ust-Udinski rajon from 1965 until the Balaganski rajon was spun off again in 1989.

At Balagansk, the 25N-009 crosses the Bratsk reservoir by car ferry ; On the far right bank, the regional road 25N-002, which leads downstream, branches off to the neighboring Rajon center of Ust-Uda, a good 15 km away.
